Using the Web to report aggressive drivers

Arizona and Washington state are setting up websites where motorists can report "areas of aggressive driving". The article says the sites are not for isolated incidents, but to report areas where lots of bad driving occurs. You can also put people's license plate numbers on there.

I have a question about this part of the story:

Additionally, law enforcement officers will contact the registered owners of vehicles that are reported repeatedly or are caught in a particularly reckless act, Alexander says.

"We'll contact that person in person," he says. "Or we'll send them a letter letting that individual know that ... 'your vehicle has been identified constantly for aggressive driving behavior' — and, basically, cut it out or we will seek charges."
Can charges be brought if the police are not the ones to catch you in the act?
What is to stop an individual with a dislike for someone from putting that other persons tag on the website enough times for the police to flag them and send letters like above?
Or, it may not even be the owner of the car that is driving recklessly.

George Carlin had this idea over 20 years ago.

Issue all drivers a small dart gun that fires harmless darts with a flag on them. When some idiot cuts you off, or drives recklessly you stick a dart to his vehicle...when the police see a vehicle with 3 or more flags on it, they give the driver a ticket

I can see some of you guys driving around looking like a porcupine

On this article, no doubt someone will abuse the system, but it might help with some of the really bad drivers out there. I followed a car several miles into town one afternoon and on every single curve the driver crossed several feet over the double line into oncoming traffic.

Her driving was not erratic, she just could not judge properly the position of her vehicle on the roadway. I felt sorry for this granny, but wished I could some how let her know before she hurt herself or somebody else. I would have used a website like this if it had been available to me.

Lot's of vehicles out there, no way LE can keep an eye on even a small portion of them. I don't know if this is the answer, but we need to do something to help when we can.

Top, that was Ghallagher's idea. The flags say stupid. Whe the guys driving down the road with half a dozen on his car, the cop stops him and gives him a ticket for being stupid.
He came out on the gong show with a car door mounted to a tricycle and a bunch of "stupid" flags on it.
They should take the money from that program and spend whre it would do some good........like more police.

My neighbor is one of them he drives a super duty dark blue with dark blue canopy it has red and blue lights mounted in factory fog light locations. I think it is funny that washington state is partaking in this you will never see more idiots driving 55-60 in the fast lane we have plenty of pacecars. Washington state troopers just need to start writing tickets to people who mess up the flow of traffic people get road rage from two people going 55 in a 60 in the right and left lanes causes cluster which cause accidents. Washington, the only state where you can get a ticket for 5 over limit

In KS you can file a complaint against a poor driver complaining that he/she violated the law, but you have to sign the complaint and testify in court, and be able to identify the driver of the vehicle. Most officers will realy pullout all stops to avoid taking areport like that. It is too much of a hassle and generaly a waste of time.

That's pretty much the way it is everywhere. If it's not committed in the officers presence, he can't cite, there are a few exceptions. The complainant is the witness and would be required to appear if it went to a hearing. BUT, most prosecutors won't allow it unless there are two witnesses. Otherwise, it's just he said/she said. Most proto-call requires the complainant to come in to file a written, signed complaint. If the person felt the driving was dangerous enouph to warrant taking the time out of there day to make a full blown report and appear in court, then we'll make an effort. Kinda weeds out the tattle tales and cry babies.

Colorado has a program going right now where you can call the State Patrol *277 from your cell and turn in a tag number. Tag goes into database, and when it gets 3 hits the CSP sends you a nice letter that they will be watching you closely. (NOT from personal experience)

Colorado also has a law on the books that it is illegal to be talking on a cell while driving.

So, does that mean if you are the caller, you've just turned yourself in for illegal cell phone use??

City cops in unmarked vehicles are starting to target agressive drivers--when will they target the REAL cause? The slow drivers in the left lane impeding traffic.

Colorado just passed a law that it is illegal to drive in the left lane of a multi lane highway, unless you are actually passing another vehicle. They know there is a problem, but they don't enforce it.

Go figure...
