Truck will stick in mud!!!
And just how do I know this? Well...<br><br>Moving some machinery to the basement, thru the yard. Been drizzling off and on, been OK past week until lots of rain came. Got too far south in the dark (I have a couple of springs that make part of the place swampy), and it didn't go no more.<br><br>Funny thing was the rears stayed on top and spun, but the front sunk darn near to the control arms.<br><br>Left it until after work next day; some jacking and some fill material cured problem and drove it to a harder surface more fitting for it's operation.<br><br>Point is, it wasn't hard to do and I'd hate to do this in the woods without recovery gear. Several other vehicles go in and out no problem, but this one sure sunk quick.<br><br>Rob<br><br>PS Naturally the tractor and the jeep are both still winterized and I got no batteries at the moment. You got to work to develop that sort of sense of timing. Planned to get them back operational next weekend, oh well.
Re:Truck will stick in mud!!!
There's a guy who lives in the next building over from me, and I found him in the mud a couple weeks ago. It seems that a couple of the maintenance "kids" from our complex decided to take their golf carts across a muddy field (after a hard rain) to the store. So my buddy drove in to get them out and found himself stepping onto the ground level with his floorboards. Needless to say, he couldn't go anywhere....the 4 wheel drive wouldn't even turn his wheels. The tow truck driver even got stuck and only got out using the flatbed as a pusher to get him a couple feet at a time. It took a couple other 4x4 trucks to get him and the golf carts out. He even got $75 from the manager for trying to help their kids out of the mud. Apparently even the 4x4 diesel doesn't do well in the mud.<br><br>-SFB
Re:Truck will stick in mud!!!
Once that heavy front end starts to sink, even the 4x4 will be hard pressed to get out. I've had mine buried to nearly the top of the wheels on more than one occasion from just that. The only thing more depressing than saying "i wish i had 4x4" is watching 6 tires spin and still be going nowhere.
Re:Truck will stick in mud!!!
had mine burried to the frame rails about 2 days after I bought it
<br><br>got stuck in a hole I go through with the old 74 powerwagon regularly :'(<br><br>anyhow, smoked my clutch trying to get out, broke the 3" tow strap trying to yank it out with the power wagon (15,000 lb's my ***), didn't even budge it<br><br><br>we pulled it out with a logging chain and a hi-lift jack hooked to a nearby tree . I'd heard of it being done before, but never seen it in person myself, it actually worked
who knew<br><br>so now I got a 4" tow strap (rated for 30,000 lb's this time) and I'm planning on some 33" goodyear MTR's and a winch for this summer
..................I'll make it through that hole this time ................yes I will ;D

Re:Truck will stick in mud!!!
My 89 was good in the snow but sunk like an anchor in the mud. Dug it out on several ocassions one scoop at a time. Too front heavy for mud.
Great for pulling up slippery boat ramps too. I had to back the rear axle off the ramp some times here at low tide and it always came back up as long as I kept that front axle on the ramp. Made a believer out of several fellows one day. They bet money they would have to pull me out. Won gas money that day. Cool.

No it's not time for a 4 x 4, although it did kind of cross my mind ;D. The way the front end was headed for China in the silty stuff, I doubt it would have helped.<br><br>I like the bed height of the 4 x 2; I load a lot of parts and tool boxes in and out. Didn't really want the extra height of a 4 x 4.<br><br>If I move to a 4 x 4 I'd think about various combos of lockers and limited slips. Re:Truck will stick in mud!!!
Sunk my truck on the stock tires. Buried the front axle. Very easily came out. Put a set of Goodyear Wranglers on, drove through lakes with ease. ;D Glad I finally got that part of my life done with. I got tired of cleaning the mud out. Now I'm a tow only vehicle. Have a 1" thick steel braided rope with loops on the end. Designed for cranes. Don't think I'll have to worry about it breaking.
