Ive always been a fan if 1/2 of a large bottle of NyQuil. Not very original or home made, but it does the trick every time.

Make yourself a cup of hot tea, add a shot of bourbon and a teaspoon of honey. A few drops of lemon juice also helps the mixture. Drink about 3 of these and you will heat up and sweat this stuff out of your body.

Works great I use Crown Royal in it myself. Don't be afraid to use more honey, that actually helps I think.

You can also mix the lemon theraflu with hot tea and honey. Still have the effect of the theraflu without the awful taste.

I think Iker handed his cold to me as well.... rotten thing is tough to shake....
I don't have any real snake oil solutions though, I just thought I would jump on the "blame Iker" bandwagon....

O.K., I have being sick down to an art. I don't get sick often, but I have the proceedure for when i do.

1. Pick 1 caring loved one who is able to put up with anything, and keep them around. If you don't have someone that caring, then have everyone leave the house. I'm a big baby whiner when I'm sick, and it takes a special person to put up with that.

2. Take 3 of every cold medicine in the house. I'm a big guy, so I take 3. If you are smaller, take 2. Don't worry about that warning label that says not to mix the stuff. I usually mix tylenol, aleve, and a few other things...whatever i can find. If there is any nasty tasting liquid, I drink that as well. I learned when I was a kid that the best things always taste the worse. Somewhere between this step and step 4, drink a large amount of the adult beverage of your choice. I'm not talking beer...but you sure won't be craving that anyway.

3. Unplug the phone. This is partially to allow you to get sleep, but its also to keep you from being able to make calls and bug everyone you know about how sick you are. This way you will still HAVE friends when you are better.

4. Go to BED. Sleep works wonders. I always call into work as soon as I begin to feel sick. This way, most colds, the flu, etc. usually only lasts 1 day, 2 tops then I'm back to almost 100%. If I try to be a hero and stick it out, I spend 3 or 4 days getting worse and worse, 2-3 days home in bed, and another 2-3 days slowly getting better after I make it back to work. I'm useless when I'm sick, so i try to limit how long I'm sick. So go to bed, don't move (except the necessary runs to the bathroom. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have used the word "runs"...)

5. Forget tissues. They are for cute little petite female sneezes. When I'm really sick, Niagara Falls comes out of my nose. I keep a roll of paper towels handy at all times. The heavy-duty blue ones from a part's store work pretty well...and they are actually kind of soft to the touch. Pricey though.

6. Buckets are good. One by the bed, and one in the bathroom. Sometimes you just can't spin around fast enough, and when you are that sick, its really not the time to get dizzy and fall down. then you REALLY have something to clean up. (Don't ask that of the loved one you ask to stick around, or you will find yourself in the house alone.)

7. This is where that lved one comes in. They will be making mercy runs. You will go through phases of not wanting to look at any type of food whatsoever, then suddenly have cravings for all kinds of wierd stuff. You need someone to bring you all that wierd stuff. Just make sure the buckets from step 6 are in place.

Sorry this didn't include the recipe you were looking for, but it may help you get through it better.

Jim

Jim, sounds like a good plan!

Granmaw used to make a tonic of Liptons Blackberry tea and a little bit of brandy, with honey..... always perked me right up!!!!

The otehr thing I use if I start feelin pukey is warm jello( make it following the instructions but dont chill it) with a little rum in it.... dont know if it helps the cold, but it puts me to sleep long enough that I feel better when I wake up!

When I feel something coming on, I just leave it up to the Mrs. to start gathering whatever she thinks will fix me.
She ends up waiting on me hand and foot (cuz I'm a big, whiney baby when I am sick) and I figure, she'll either get me something that really kicks butt and get's me well fast..... or she's gonna be nursing me for quite a while.

She gave me some crazy concoction last year ... not sure what it was (didn't wake up until June ) and I was back in action in no time.
Definately detected a strong Rum odor .
