tires question

I caught a commercial for ford tire service. Mike Rowe was talking about not using a penny to gauge tread depth but to use a quarter instead.
I have always used the wear bars on the tire.
What method do you guys use for tire wear?

At nearly $500 a piece, I squeeze as much as I can out of them before I replace them

I push my tires as far as I can too. but this ford commercial would have you changing tires with quite a bit of tread left. yea, I know, its a commercial and they just want to sell you something. but this is starting to really sound like the oil change sequence that is being pushed (every 3000 mile or sooner). most owners manuals say 3500 and if you read the description for city driving, very few of us really do that kind of driving anyway.

Fronty, I change my oil every 5k miles, have on every ctd I've owned, it's easy to remember, I also buy tires at even 5k's on the odometer so I can remember how many miles they last

I think like you that they are just trying to sell tires, I don't worry about them until I'm at the wear bars unless winter is coming on
