Tim McGraw's "HOE" song

so I been going to church, praying, and the Bible says the old man will be washed away, and a new one will come in. Maybe so, because seems like music and TV bothers me more, but the wife says this song is great, and there's nothing wrong with it.

to me, i would not want to explain to my kids (or grandkids if had them) what a HOE, blow, or crack was, esp if a blow isn't a big wind or cocaine.

just don't seem like a good "family" song.

so am I square, or is the wife right?
and you would not mind explaining this song to your kids?

I think of the Statlers song, "counting flowers on the wall" where my Dad had to explain it ALL to me, and to my daugthers once when he was listening to it.

Tim seems to want evoke a simpler, more innocent time, but seems to remind me more of what is wrong now.

I think he is talking about what is wrong with the world now. At the same time he's trying to get you to remember what it was like when things were simpler and maybe that's what we need to be teaching our kids. My guess is that most kids already know what the stuff he's mentioning is. Blow by the way is not what you think it is it's cocaine. NO I don't know this from experience. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

I haven't heard the song, but here's a link to the lyrics.

I think I side with the wife.
Don't know any kids old enough to be able to understand the words that will need anything explained to them.
Yes, this is sad, but it's the world we live in.

I edited out the initials in the previous posts, we don't need to be referencing that here.

I too was caught off-guard when I heard it. I think it's a bit over the top - especially for Country.

This is coming from a 32 year old - I guess I'm a square too.

Hmmmmmm, not sure if it should be X rated, but I can relate to the message.

I thought the it was a bit too harsh for country radio when I first heard it, so you guys are not alone. And I'm only 21.

Really surprised me to hear Tim McGraw do a song like this.

phox...tks for the edit..was wondering how to phrase that...

okay guys, tks for the feedback...was wondering if it was just me being too uptight.

i guess my thought is, i don't really want my kids to know what that stuff is.
seems like you would be able to proctect them from the world, but the world is so...(evil, bad, demonic, athiest, insert your own word here) that the bad people have permeated all the public communications and brought this stuff into our face 24/7

here's what TV in general, and songs like this make we think about:

Ephesians 6:12 - For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

that the folks "in high places" putting TV and music in front of our families, are (spiritually) wicked?

what do you guys think of that gay bimbo doing the AMEX commercials?
kind of says to me "AMEX core values are that we are gay and we don't CARE what you think"

and the Discover commercial who served his country in the US NAVY, and loves his wife, and discover card's core values are "we love and support and defend our country, and respect our wives and families."

"what card's in your wallet?" takes on a new meaning, eh?

ok, Phox...edit it, make it read bettter....

nah... the lyrics are not that bad. believe me, i listen to much worse. kids are going to learn about it soon enough. i would rather be the one to explain it to them then for them to actually get involved with everything in the song.

just my opinion

We don't do those kinds of edits, just the ones to keep the site nice and friendly.

I think you said it pretty well, the morals of the country are slipping fast.

It's kind of a catch twenty two I guess.

A song that talks about morality slipping and such but we plays everything we don't want to hear about over the radio???

Sadly most are probably right, any kid old enough to understand the words knows what it's all about anyway. But still. Why reinforce it??

I don't like the latest Tim McGraw Stuff.

I liked "Down on the Farm" and my all time favourite "Indian Outlaw"

If your kids are over the age of about 9 and in public school, even in a small community, they know a lot more about a lot more than you want them to know about at that age. Read it twice if you have to. I did.

It isn't right that their innocence gets ripped away so fast but it does. Pretending it doesn't won't help. Time to be a parent, and have some frank age-appropriate discussions when they're young. It will make it eaiser for both of you when you have the age appropriate discussions when they get older. Pretending that the world is a great place where bad things never happen to good people is beyond naevitey(sp). If you've never told them about the bad stuff, how will they know it's bad?

The song I really liked about the whole changing world thing was "Billy the Kid".

On edit:They aren't getting their info from the teachers, by the way.

teachers seem to be 'tards nowadays. one my kids teachers tells them he is ADD.

he screams and yells at them in a (funny but) annoying way.

her psyche teacher told her "if you ask a teenager if they are gonna commit suicide, they will give you a clear cut YES or NO answer, and you don't need to worry about it anymore"

i've never got a clear answer from my teenagers on most anything.

If in doubt, just ask yourself....what would Jesus think about it? I've not heard the song you're talking about because I don't really listen to the radio that much....but if it's as you say then I'd certainly agree with you that it's not a very good song to be listening to.

Since you've got your Bible handy....look in Matthew 15 or Mark 7 where Jesus tells His disciples that it's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man but what comes out of it.

I was disappointed by Tim doing that song. I agree with the message he is trying to send, but not with the method.
My kids are all old enough to have been exposed to that, they grew up when Nickeloden( the " kids network"???) was showing Ren and Stimpy, ( not realy child's fare is it?)
and most of what is referenced in that song is in the radio, tv or teen magazines all the time anymore.
I wa accussed of being a " tight-something" because I wont let my 17 yr old daughter shop at Abercrombie-Finch after seeing their catalogue. If you havent seen it, it is sold in a plastic wrapper, and you have to be 18 to buy it, but it is targeted for the 14-17 yr old crowd. its nothing more than soft-****, and not all that soft......
I guess I am just getting old.
