? for those of you who are Certified welders
I don't know exactly what you're looking for in an answer, mainly because there are general differences and technical differences. Taking into account you are specifically asking for an answer from a certified welder, I suspect the answer you're looking for may be more along the technical line, perhaps to study for or even pass a welding cert test.
As Admin and member Blake will attest, (who is also a certified welding inspector), I am by NO means an expert in stick welding, therefore my answer would be more in the general arena. However, until someone with credible knowledge comes along to give you a REAL answer, check out this link; http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...p/t-19705.html
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

if you are looking for basics the 6010 and 6011 have more penetration and good for dirty metal, you use a back and forth motion to clean the metal in front of the puddle then add to your puddle, basically you are making a oval shape if you know what i mean. The 6013 is a low hydrogen rod for clean steel, doesn't penetrate as much as 6011 but makes a much cleaner weld, you just lay it in there with a little pressure and drag it, alot like the 7018 is which I prefer for most welds on mild steel. hope this helps you a little

6010 and 6011 are virtually the same rods. except 6010 is DC and 6011 is AC only machines. These deep penetrate. I find the 6011 easy to run. THese are often called the 'farmers rods' as many farmers use the for repairs out in the field. They'll run no matter how unprepped the metal is.
also when you see 60xx or 70xx on the rods, they mean tensile strength.
What are you working on?

Feel free to become a knowledgeable and experienced welder. We have a third party inspector that comes in regularly to witness testing. In her down time, she hangs out and gives advise to the welders. She has the personality that she could probably scare mark and when she showed the welders that she really knew what she was talking about, it improved their skills. Just kinda funny all these burly welders getting ordered around by a woman and really listening to what she says.
Well I used to be a certified welder....about 15 yrs ago! I need to practice for a test with 6010 which I did know was DC only. I want to practice with the one most like the 6010 , but I only have an AC welder. It's been so long I just forgot which one I need to practice with!

Most of yall hit the nail on the head.
6010 is mild steel DC rod (Lincoln 5P+)
6011 is an AC/DC rod (think farm use, Ag School shop learning)
Both of the above are a cellulose based flux
6013 is a mild steel Rutile base flux rod
To build on Ms Shorts info
60xx = 60k PSI rod
xx1x = welding position
xxx1 = flux composition
