Old post ... but I've been playing hookie for a while and just now got to it.
My family and I had to evacuate from this fire ... it came within a mile of my house. Can't & won't say anything positive or negative about FEMA because we didn't have to deal with them ... BUT ... I can attest to the fantastic way that both the Red Cross and the people of Houston took care of all of us "evacuees".
We were first evacuated to Magnolia High School until we got word of a shelter in a church down the road. The people in there immediately made everyone as comfortable as possible. My family of 7 wasn't an easy group to situate, but they managed to get us an area where we could all be together.
FaceBook groups were started to keep anyone with internet access informed of progress ... a lot of mis-information until the locals "in the know" took control and made it effective. HIGHLY RECOMMEND using FB as a communication tool for future disasters ...
And food ... HOLY COW ... what do you think of when you hear emergency shelter ?? Personally, I was thinking MRE's .... NOPE ... local people were bringing in brisket, BBQ, lasagna, fresh fruit & veggies ... cakes, pies ... and of course pizza & McD's. I put on 3 lbs in the week we were there.
Red Cross volunteers for the most part were top shelf !! They even allowed my two daughters to help ... those girls worked their tails off and I am sooo proud of them.
Anyway ... long story short ... this was an large scale emergency situation just like they have anywhere else however, Texans take care of each other like no other place I have ever lived (after 44 years of roaming the world). Now that I've settled down here and saw with my own 4-eyes what Texas Pride is all about ... I'm proud to call Texas my home.
Cheers,
PISTOL
