Cool Surgery (sorry it's so long)

Ok, I know this isn't a diesel thread, but I just had to share some info for anyone with nose probems...
I just got out of surgery to fix my deviated septum. The septum is the partition in the middle of your nose that seperates the nostrils, and mine was crooked...sounds like a common problem from what I understand. Anywho..the deviated septum caused me to have pretty much a constant sinus infection and a lot of ear infections. The surgery was an outpatient surgery and only took about an hour. I can actually breathe out of both sides of my nose for the first time in years!! I have gauze under my nose at the moment because it is still bleeding a bit. As for pain, my nose doesn't really hurt bad, it feels more swollen than anything. My throat really hurts though because they put me on a respirator and stuck a tube down my throat.
I put off the surgery for a couple years because I hate surgery and don't like hospitals, but my advice for anyone with a deviated septum.....get the surgery done, I've only been out of surgery for about 5 hours and I can already tell a big difference!!! Things taste better, and even with the gauze under my nose I can smell better! Hope this didn't gross anyone out too much!!

I know what you mean. I had outpatient surgery to remove my wisdom teeth (all four) a few months back. I put it off for years. But it was getting to the point where if it wasn't done it was going to cause problems. I have always had a small fear of surgeries and things of that nature (I really don't care for needles and those little sharp metal instruments). They knocked me out for mine though, glad they did.

I got knocked out for my wisdom teeth as well. All I remember is talking about the US Open and the next thing I know they are waking me up. I didn't come out of it very friendly. Quite the opposite actually.

Hmm, I may have to look into this in the future, let us know how it heals up, my nose is the same way, and I can only breath out of one nostril most of the time.

Had the exact surgery 10 years ago... mine was worse...

Had these "packs" shoved up my nose, bone grinded down, stuff removed... it was nasty...

And for wisdom teeth...

9/12/01, yeah...

No novicane or anything... doctor asked me if I was psychotic...

After he split the first one, my brain took over and the pain was null...

wow are you psychotic?? haha just kidding....I'm not getting my wisdom teeth out till they give me problems and so far they are all in and no probems yet! as for my nose...they thought about packing my nose also, but thought I could make it without packs. From what I understand, its a good thing they didn't pack it...sounds painful...It's been about 24 hours since I woke up from the surgery, it's still bleeding a litte when I take my gauze mustache off, and it has swollen a little, but they told me all this would happen so im just waiting for the swelling to go down....my throat still hurts more than my nose does and I still look like hitler with a gauze mustache..im just ready for all this to heal up so I can go back to "normal" life......any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: Pain pills are great when you want to sleep like a log!

Be glad they didn't pack your nose. I had mine done Aug 5,2002 and let me tell ya that is the only time I ever felt like someone was pulling my brains out of my head one inch at a time. Man I hated that.

I had that sinus surgery 20 years ago. Had my tonsils pulled at the same time. I didnt know they could shove that much packing in a human nose. I was at the DRs office and he handed me a bucket. He said hold this under your nose then he started pulling it out. NASTY to put it mildly, but I can breathe and rarely snore any more.

Hey for you guys who have had the septopasty, did you have problems with fever? They told me to go into the hospital if my fever got above 101, and all day its been sitting at about 99.5-100.5. I don't know if I should go see the nice ladies at the ER or not?

I've had multiple knee surgeries....

3 'scopes, an ACL, and a bone chip off the patella.

Not crazy about the pain....but THE ABSOLUTE BEST NAPS I HAVE EVER HAD !

Most everyone comes out of surgery dehydrated...so they give you ice chips or water. I usually wake up yelling for a beer!

No, I don't go looking for surgery, but you really have to have trust in your surgeon, the staff, and the anesthesiologist.

I have to agree about the naps part! I haven't had much pain with this surgery, but the pain killers they gave me have given me the most sleep I've had since I was a baby! I can hardly stay awake on them even when im trying to stay awake! Goood stuuuuff... The fever went away, so I think im on the downhill slide

Well, it's been about a month since the surgery and everything is pretty much back to normal! I have been fighting off a sinus infection the past week though, but my step-dad is a pharmacist and said he thought that might happen...Other than that, I'm still nervous to hit my nose because I'm afraid it will knock something out of whack, but it feels just like it used to (except for the fact that I can breathe now). One thing I have noticed though, is that they must have done something to a nerve or I am still healing or something because the roof of my mouth towards the front is kinda numb still...just feels weird, but not too bad! If anyone is considering this surgery, go for it! It is really nice to be able to actually use your nose for breathing!

I am 23 and have had both knees reconstructed and had follow up surguries on both to remove hardware etc... And I also bulged a disc hemeraged a disc in my back, and completly fractured a chunk off on of my vertebra. That puts me at 6 surguries and counting, and this may sound hard to believe but I absolutly dig surgury. Bring em on!

This is cool because my Dr. is having my snout screened for the deviated septum and I am a little freaked out about surgeries since I almost crashed last year when I had my gall-bladder removed. Simple surgeries are safe my butt!! I had my first cavity a few months ago (I'm 33) and I panickedwhenthey started towards me with the needle. I acted like a little girl, and I'm 6'4" and 245 lbs!

THere's nothing wrong with that! I went in for cholesterol; they stuck me 10x. It did not help that I was dehydrated. Before that Incident, I never had an issue with needles. Now, I do! But, it's getting better: I just have to remember to hydrate REALLY well the night before & in the morning.

IF you are having issues with the surgery (emotional or physical), talk to your doctor/surgeon. I've had 5 knee surgeries. The first 2, I came out of surgery like I had 2 moths of chest cold (yes, I am athsmatic). The 3rd time in, I mentioned it to the anaesthesiologist. He gave me a broncho dilator & other meds; That was the clearest my lungs had been in YEARS!

HTH
