Surfing in a soup bowl?

Huey sent me this picture to post for you guys, a kind of "How not to spend your vacation" kind of thing.

I wonder what this surfer has running through his mind right about now?

I would say that's a dolphin. When I lived in DE and surfed, used to see pods go through just a little ways away. Pretty cool actually.

Re:Surfing in a soup bowl?

everyone has a story...but grew up in florida...always at the beach...Mom and Dad surf fished all the time. Mom caught a 6' hammerhead right out from where we were swimming.

Have been bumped before too...very scary....

Ya, me too. I don't think it's an Orca, but it's pretty big for a bottle-nose Dolphin too. Years ago in Cocoa Beach, FL the Dolphin were so thick you had to compete with them to get good wave position. Come to think of it....so were the sharks. They never bothered us, but we always had an eye on them.

Re:Surfing in a soup bowl?

Guess I am looking at the wrong picture, I can see a white belly and lower half of the head is white as well. looks like an Orca to me.

Might be glare off the water though, that fin doesn't look tall enough to be an orca. Oh well, not a place to be during feeding time thats for certain!

Re:Surfing in a soup bowl?

It is not a Whale, or a shark.

This was shot in Malibu, California on April 19th, 2003.

It was shot with a Canon Eos 1D digital SLR camera.

The lens was a Canon EF 400 2.8L with a 1.4xII extender.

This is NOT altered in anyway. It is a DOLPHIN !!!!!!

We get stuff like that up here in Saskatchewan all the time.
Only difference is the dolphins are wearing sweaters up here.

Re:Surfing in a soup bowl?

Im not much of a water guy.
Even though I was born and raised in So. Cal, I stuck to the wide open areas of the high desert.
If I were that fellow on the surf board, the next picture would look something like what you see in cartoons when the cartoon character gets up and runs across the water.... that would be me!

Looks more like a shark to me. It doesn't have the shape or the coloring of an Orca...and seems too big to be a dolphin. But then, what do I know?? :-

But then....after looking at that website, I guess I'm wrong. Imagine that. :

Re:Surfing in a soup bowl?

That was my initial thought, but it's obvious that it's not gold. Could be a Texas catfish though...
