supporting our troops

This may not necessarily fit the title. Anyway, here is the situation. My wifes daughter from another marriage is in the marines stationed in San Diego. She just found out she is going to Iraq in a couple of weeks. My wife who lives in Texas wants to see her off. She asks work if she can take off from work to say goodbye etc. Her work informs her that if she goes she might as well just quit. Huh? They won't allow my wife time off to say good bye to her daughter who is fighting for our country. I mean she can but she won't have a job when she gets back. SCREWY!! and very sad too.

Is there any sort of legal or just any type of action that can be done?

Thanks all

That sucks big time.
However, I believe the employer can do what they are saying (as crappy as that is).
Texas is an employment "at-will" state, this means that either the employer or employee may end the employment relationship at any time for any or no reason at all.

Tell her to thank her daughter for us all,

Well that's not a place I'd be working for for long. Just goes to show you how the people in this country are. I know not everybody is like that, but it just seems that we forget alot or just don't care, which is sad. I guess it will take another 9/11 to get to country "united" again. Only to go back to same after a few short months.

I respect all of our men and women in uniform and everytime I look at out flag I think of the people who died fighting for it. That is just cold blooded for your wifes employer not to let her see her sister off. That could very well be the last time she might ever see her.

I say to tell them to stick it and walk off. I wish the best for you wifes sister and hopes she stays safe and makes it back home to see her family.

I'm not sure if something like that falls under the Family and Medical Leave act. Why don't you do some searching and by then I'm sure some of our more legal minded members will weigh in on this one.

Personally, I think that is garbage and would advise your wife to resign immediately and then put in a phone call to a few of the local news stations. Regardless of whether or not anyone feels we should be playing in the sand box we are there and our troops need all the support they can get. Shame on whoever your wife works for. They need a lesson in respect for those who are fighting to protect their selfish minded behinds!!!

No ... that probably isn't going to fall under that provision. I have honestly never heard of someone being denied time off to go see their child off to war.

It does fall under the "Because it's the right thing to do" Act of Sept.11, 2001 and the employer needs to have a size 9 up their backside .

Wish her all my best and prayers for a safe, speedy return home.

I would have to agree; my daughter comes first and I would risk my job to see her off. I think her employer is unethical, cruel and a poor excuse for an american citizen and an american business. What happened to... patriotism?

Please give her a stranger's thank-you for joining and helping protect the freedom for which I live under. I hope she comes back safe and sound. I have the greatest respect for each, every and all of our service men and woman.

If the facts are as you state the owner of this company needs to be exposed and shamed. I would call the local and national news and have them do a story on this. This is totally unacceptable. We are at war, and we need to do what ever we can to support our troops and their familes. This would make a great news piece and maybe even get a fund raising thing going to help pay for your expenses.

This may seem like a small, insignificant gesture, but it is these types of things that really help the moral of our troops.

I am sorry to hear of such a low life individual even having the ability to manage others. Tell your wife to do what feels right in her heart, and she can be at peace with her decision. And please tell your step-daughter we are thankfull for her willingness to stand and fight for America, it is an honor and a privilege.
