Such a waste

Chrysler orders 93 rare early Vipers to the crusher.

Such a waste.

This is just sick.
The excavator operator does not seem to coordinated either.

That is kind of crazy.
Every week lots of cars go up for auction that are somewhat rare, are way over powered
or don't have all the safety bells and whistles for normal driving (Lambo's, Shelbys, Ferrari's etc).
Cars are also sold with disclaimers telling the new owner not to drive them for safety reasons (like students working on them).
If nothing else Chrysler could put them up for auction and use the money for education or something.

I just ran across that. Supposedly someone took a couple out on the streets and got in wrecks, and it cost Fiat/Chrysler/whoever a couple million. Which makes on sense, and we probably would have heard about it on the news.

Probably someone from Gubmint motors hacked into their servers and sent the emails out since they just got their Corvette's crunched in a sinkhole.

That kind of action makes perfect sense to ......lawyers.

Pretty well explains why things are so screwed up in this country. Most of our "representatives" are lawyers.

We could stretch this thread forever just listing examples of wreckage in the name of progress.

That's a real problem today with the automakers, they don't want someone who can tear down an engine and put fresh bearings in, or rebuild it, in their shops. They want someone who can run the computer that tells them they need a new motor, and bolt the new motor in.

If I was running that school I'd tear the car down and stick the pieces in the attic somewhere.

Jim,

Is that video you posted above some sort of "PR" video ?

What doesn't make a bit of sense to me is that you have a crowd of guys standing there watching this, when in any real junkyard that a vehicle was about to be scrapped, the car would have been just dropped into a shredder or crusher, and all that time and effort wouldn't have been spent on watching some yo-yo break up a car with an excavator. That video seems like too much time and effort was spent making some kind of statement, vs just crushing the vehicle for the reasons stated in the article.

If it smells like fish, it probably is a fish.

That was my initial thought as well, however it appears as if Chrysler only required proof of destruction, and left it to the various schools to comply.

There is more than one video floating around of these cars being destroyed.

Back in the late 80's before I had my El Camino and then my Chevy 6.2, I had a 1985 Suburban, of course it was all custom and I was at a local wrecking yard looking for some interior parts when I noticed a section of the wrecking yard that was all fenced off, it looked like an impound yard and inside there were about 15 or 20 brand new Suburban and pick up trucks of all different colors and some were smashed here and there but all looked to have minor damage to them,

I ask at the office hoping they were going to sell them at an auction and what he told me got me absolutely sick.

He said all of these trucks and about 30 more that are at another yard were all on a rail car being delivered for distribution when there was a rail accident and some of the rail cars derailed and damaged some of the trucks and cars, the insurance company paid off and he said that all of the cars and trucks on the rail car had to be destroyed, nothing could be salvaged or sold.

These trucks could have been easily repaired, they were using a big fork lift that had a big claw on it and it was tearing the engines out and everything was being crushed.

The only mileage these vehicles had on them was from driving them onto the rail cars.

I will never forget this.

Jim

That would be not too long after Chrysler got caught repairing just such vehicles and selling them as new. Govt. fined them heavily and looks like lesson learned from manufacturers and insurance companies

insurance companies have lawyers as well.

on a positive story ( can't confirm) Detroit industrial high school/ tech school shopmaster got a letter for approval to sell one section of the proto type viper (one quarter panel, one radiator, ect.) to separate individuals for fundraising to fund four more years of shop class. because he went to the motor guy directly and not some company schmo; some kids can get a scholarship/internship at research/development now. some machines were replaced with better/newer units. some kids were responsible for selling the parts and became interested in the sales aspects to see the whole process.

thanks to one enterprising teacher, not a lawyer. don't know if this was hush hush or promoted though.....hooray for common sense!
