Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

iHey Hoss! EGT is indeed exhaust gas temp. The Ram Air III
is an air intake system to allow your engine to breathe better, thus lowering the EGT. I believe that this particular system is for the 3rd gen trucks. With a modified engine, if the EGTs get too high, you can do unkind things to your engine: melted pistons, etc.

Your questions weren't stupid at all. I teach for a living, and I can guarantee you that there ARE stupid questions, but yours don't fit the catagory. ;D

Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

DPG...thanks for the info. One more question....if your truck is all stock do you ever have to worry about the EGT getting too high?? Seems if you did then the manual would have said something about it and they would have put a factory gauge on it to monitor. ???

Blue...so far so good. I've really enjoyed it. ;D

Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

In all reality, if the truck is stock, I wouldn't worry bout the EGT unless you are pulling some SERIOUS loads (15k+). If your just dying to start bombing this truck (and I know you are ) then call Rod up and ask him bout the Scotty III. He can tell you everything you'd ever want to know. Or just ask Scotty himself. Here's the link to that thread I was telling you bout. Scotty III Test results

Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

Hoss,
Due to product liability issues these trucks are seriously detuned to make them last the 100K+ miles they are supposed to. Stock EGTs are designed to never get into the danger zone on any diesel sold to the great unwashed American public. This is done so Ford and Chevy diesel drivers don't have to think about what they are doing when driving one (not that they ever think anyway as witnessed by what they drive : ).

My truck is stock (for now, maybe not much longer ;D ) but I added gauges because 1) all of my other vehicles have the necessary gauges to appropriately monitor operation, 2) I will not keep it stock forever, 3) I pull heavy from time to time, 4) I feel better knowing what the engine and trans are doing and 5) because I like the looks of the triple pillar mount (yeah, I am a gauge nut ).

Here is an analogy - If you go to the doctor regularly to keep an eye on how your body is doing then why not keep an eye on what your truck is doing, also. It's a whole lot less expensive to put in a gauge and see something going wrong and catch it before it makes problems than it is to wait until the idiot light comes on.

A few gauges offer peace of mind. Not to mention its really 8) to watch the pyro climb along with the boost gauge ;D

Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

Hoss, if you are stock, and you do not exceed the weight ratings for the truck, you don't have to worry about exceeding safe EGT's. However, once the bombing bug bites, you are your own warranty station. That's when you need the gauges to keep you out of trouble. (and the repair shop)

DeWain

As to why Dodge doesn't equip the trucks with the basic guages from the factory,
Imagine if you will, Joe Unwashed Public driving in his new diesel, watching the guages go up and down, visiting the service department every time he sees something "different" on the guages.
"Is this normal" he asks, "why does it do that", etc.

Lots and Lots of valuble wasted time by the service writers and mechanics.

And, of course, it saves money not putting them in.

phox

Re:Stupid Question I'm Sure....But,

Hoss, why would you need a light under the hood? Unless you are out there late at night drooling over your new CTD? See what diesel fumes do to you? Quick acting stuff eh? See what you have been missing by driving a gasser all these years. Now for that, you NEED a light under hood.
