Stihl MS 361 chains
Stihl MS 361 chains
Hey...whose running this saw out there? I'm trying to decide on this yellow type chain, full chisel, as opposed to my stock green type.
Also, a 25" bar is the biggest this thing takes. Is this too much bar for it...or still has a lot of motor left to spin this big bar.
thanks

This link is for the Chain Saw forum. There is a lot information on the MS361.
The choise between safety chain (green) and non safety ( yellow) is kickback protection. Green is for anyone who operates a saw once in a while and is not really familiar with how a saw might kickback. (Take a look at the injury and fatality forum for graphic pictures of kickback injuries).
25 Inches is not a big bar and the 361 will do fine with it. The key is to keep the chain sharp and out of the dirt. There is also a lot of good pointers on sharpening chain.
Most who have run the MS361 find it to be one of the best saws they ever have ran for the size. I got to run two last year that had been modded just a bit - real fun.

From the sounds of it you do not have a lot of time on the handle.
I would strongly advise you to run the green anti-kickback versus the full chisel.
Get some time under your belt, do the usual rookie stupid tricks and then decide if you want full chisel.
There are times where people decide they are smarter than the tool they are operating, most times it is not fatal, with a chain saw the opposite is true.

the ms361 replaced the ms360 which replaced the 036. the 036 was stihls 28 inch pro saw. the bean counters decided bar size by displacement rather than horse power. the ms361 has the same hp as the ms390 28" consumer saw but less cc. 361 will pull a 28" just fine(works best with full chisel, full skip chain) but dealer must sell with 25" max(liability).

When I bought my new Stihl a couple years ago, the shop owner said he couldn't even legally seel me a full chisel (he called it a "competition" chain
) chain with my new saw. I told him no deal with a safety chain, they're pretty worthless unless you grind the safety teeth off or have a shop sharpen your chain regularly and they keep tthe safety teeth filed down as neeeded. So he slipped me a good chain under the table and I "left" the green chain on his counter.
Just someone trying to save us from ourselves, IMO. I don't cut much wood at all now, thankfully, but grew up cuttin' firewood for the house every year with an old Mac 710. That thing didn't even have a chain brake.

i won't run a saw unless it has full chisel chain on it, that anti kick back chain is just too slow, and makes sawing a lot more work. if you're scared of kick back, buy some chaps and a helmet/faceshield. you should probably have those regardless, i try to wear mine every time i cut. i haven't needed them yet, but i'll be glad to have them if i ever do. most of the time people aren't killed by saws, just seriously cut or maimed.

wonder if I should strap a NOS bottle to my husky?

[quote=Fronty Owner;2512480]dang it... you would have to mention the mod bug with chain saws....

The two saws had never been into wood until that day. They were built by two different builders. One with a pipe and one without. THe one without looked stock but surely did not run like it was stock. Also got to run an 084 - that is a big saw! Lots of fun.
I am on the right with the 084 and the other saw is a 2100 husky.

My husky is a little husky 142. it works fine for cutting firewood a few times per year. Its slow because of the anti kick back chain. It will pull a 18" safety chain pretty good.
Guys, I won't use anything less than a full chisel myself.
That being said, a newbie on a chainsaw ( and I make that assumption because he has not corrected me ) is much safer starting out with anti-kickback installed. This isn't Tooltime, and 3 grunts will not replace a limb.
And yes, my dealer has a fit every time I buy chains, no full chisel, no sale....... But after 32 years of running one, I will hopefully not remove the wrong limb!
