the stark reality of this economic collapse

Yesterday I was at work at our last account, cleaning a parking lot(stay in school kiddos) when my dad pulled up.(I work for him).Any how I could tell something was wrong with him. He tells me he is leaving an eatery he frequents when a guy comes up asking about any possible work. Now in downtown Redding, it used to be if a guy was asking about work he was usually a tweaker. Not this guy sais my dad. Really clean cut, normal looking guy in his mid-early 30's. Sais he 's been out of the military a short while, did 10 years of service, a tour in Afganistan, moved out west from KC, thinking there was work here. There is none, this place is in the toilet. So this poor fellow and his wife are now homeless, sleeping outside. My dad gave the guy 10 bucks for grub, and the dude started crying and gave my dad a hug. sais that's the first nice gesture anyone has done for him in a week. The reallity of this mess we are in, normal folks, out of work and on the streets. We would of gave the guy a job, but we can hardly keep 3 guys busy. Anyhow, I thought I would share as I know a lot of vet's are on this site. Remember a little kindness goes a long way. be good to each other

I ran into something similar in November when I was doing my stair job. Guy came up, older fella, Vietnam vet lost his job doing contruction, mason, brick layer well spoken guy and really knew his construction. Same thing, wanted some work, not a hand out. I told him I could barely keep the guy that was helping me busy, just there if I need two extra hands. Luckily my brother in law was doing a job up the street and needed help for a few weeks.

It's the sad truth of the times

I'd be re-enlisting right quick if I were him, especially right now.

I agree, I would reenlist fast.
This small area that I live in is holding up well, as far as jobs and keeping people fed. But only because of the gas drilling and that is slowing down. Not stopping but a slow down due to price of gas.
Made a trip up to Middletown OH and back last weekend could not believe the number of factories that were shut down.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know there were 70,000 layoffs announced in the States just for last month. Unfortunately this is just the beginning.
For at least two years now I have been warning you guys here on DTR to save your money, DO NOT go into debt for anything and to be prepared for the coming scenario. Times are a'changin' and the coming changes unfortunately are not going to be pretty.

I talked to a buddy yesterday, he was telling me the he has family in Texas.
He said Texas had not been affected by this recession as much as other places. I ask why that was, he sais because of the oil fields and that equals jobs and sales and on and on. My thoughts are,.. the price of oil from Arab countries is what I thought got this mess started. I know there is other factors, ....now.

A buddy of mine got out of the Corps several years ago, and went to work for the local electric utility.
He joined the Army a year and a half ago as a vehicle mechanic,....he's currently on his 3rd tour in the sandbox rebuilding remote-controled robots.

The sad reality of NAFTA is coming into full swing. Welcome to the third world "America". Our Constitution will be a historical document in about 10 years.

Mexstan, are you seeing expats coming back home due to a lack of work and strict adherence to employment credentials here? That's what the news media is reporting . I've never seen so many people of all nationalities at Home Depot here looking for work.

About three months ago, or maybe even a bit longer I was in a small village where I know some of the locals and they were telling us that some of their family that are in the states (probably illegally) only have barely enough money to eat and therefore have stopped sending money home. The local papers a couple of weeks ago reported that x million dollars (don't remember how many million) had stopped flowing south.
Yes, Mexico is definitely feeling the crunch. Every week my wife goes shopping for her normal foodstuffs, she comes back complaining about bigger and bigger jumps in prices for just the staples. We are not talking about luxuries, but things like toilet paper. I am going to give up cereal because of the sudden jump in price. Fruit is cheaper - and healthier.

Angry No vet should be hungry and begging!

No veteren in our country should be hungry or looking for a handout when there are millions of lazy Edit sucking off the welfare system.. I have never seen so many young healthy americans drawing disability in my life. There is nothing wrong with them they just found it was easier to beat the system. These people will be the last to starve because their garaunteed check comes in the mail thanks to you and me who are out here working and trying to get by. I do not have a problem with people who truley need it but have no sympathy for these lazy sobs. It is amazing our vets spend many years in the military and if they don't get to 20-30 year mark they have no pension. A one term representive or senator is set up for life. These guys can afford it and they are the ones everything is given to.
Our country has fell into this mess because of the lack of morales and unsurpassed greed. The corporate ceos need to be held responsible and law breaking politicians need to be brought to justice. We will come out of this mess but not before upper officials answer for thier crimes and the government starts fearing the people again, not the other way around.
