Angry Sorry parents = sorry kids

About 6 weeks ago one of my neighbors, a really sweet lady in her mid 60's, called me because some one was beating on her door. I met her in her front yard and she told me the story. It seems some of our neighborhood kids were running up and giving a good bang, bang, bang on the doors and scurrying off like the little roaches they are. This started about 8:30pm and while we were talking they came back down the street for round two. Much to their surprise the game wasn't as much fun this time.

Fast forward to tonight. I had to fill in for another fellow driving one of our buses at church tonight. About 8:00pm my wife called because the neighbor came running over to our house crying. When she opened her mailbox this evening and there was a bag inside. She started to open the bag and thought someone had placed a dead animal in her box. Together with my wife they managed to get the bag out of the box but neither one had the courage to look inside. When I got in tonight I checked the bag, it wasn't a dead animal. One of these little so-and-so's had crapped in a Wal-mart bag and that is what she found.

We live in the county and hardly ever see a marked unit here plus our neighborhood has been changing over the last couple years. I'm a retired LEO and understand the way it works but she just refused to call the SO the first time, she didn't want to be a bad neighbor. This time I'm calling, whether she does or not. When parents let their kids, 6-17yoa, roam unsupervised for hours at a time, trouble will only follow. I don't want to be a bad neighbor either but I refuse to be a sheep also. This needs to end soon!

Sounds like them suckers need a trip out to the woodshed!

And they say spanking causes adverse effects!

People need to put the fear back into these kids! Time-out don't cut it!

I count myself fortunate to have been raised during the last years when spankin your kids was still ok, sure instilled respect in me. There are some lessons you only need to learn once!

Had I known it was leagal in Tenn things would have been different in my house when I lived there.

We had a lot more serious problems however. I did catch one of little _____ (fill in the blank) one night and scared the daylights out of him. I held him pinned face down untill the cops came and let them deal with him. His parents had to go down to the jailhouse and get him.

It didn't solve the problems , just moved them from my house to somewhere else and I became the neighbohood bad guy.

If the neighbors would have stuck together we might have stopped some real serious things. But "...my little johnny wouldn't do such things..." prevailed and things got worse.

Isn't tampering witht he US mail ( or mailbox) a federal offense???

I think I would find out where these punks live and knock on the door and kindly "return" little Johnny's Walmart bag back to his parents...

Do I need to stick a firecracker in my own mailbox to get a visit from Jake?

I took a complaint once from a mother who's "18 y.o." was "abused" by a school faculty member on the bus. He "didn't have a right to touch her baby". Bottom line was the kid was flicking pennies up at the bus driver while in transit. Hard enuff to hurt somebody and potentially brake glass. The driver stopped the bus and chastised the kid and wouldn't drive until things quieted down. They finally got going again and some more pennies got chucked. The driver radioed in and had somebody waiting to take the kid when they got to the school. The "kid" refused to get off the bus and took a swing, knocking the guys glasses off. The guy never hit the kid, but wrestled him off the bus. The bottom line is the law allowed certain school employees to latch on to the kids when they have been disruptive to the point of endangering others so long as they don't inflict corporal punishment. Mom was not happy with the 3 charges her little baby recieved for something the school would have handled without police involvement. At 18, he's a keeper, so he didn't walk home with mama after court this time. What REALLY got me was when interviewing a couple kids in front of thier parents, at home. They bragged how THEY would have handled it, takeing a swing at the guy, etc., sooner than the kid that did. Niether parent of the 2 that said that even reacted when this came out of thier mouths.

You know, the irony in this is that the neighbor is a postal employee. The sad truth is that these types of crimes are handled as a misdemeanor in the local jurisdiction. I would love to see it go federal though. I wonder how little Rastus's mother would react to three years and $250 thousand per. Scott, thanks for the offer. I'll file it in my "Oh, don't make me to call my Sasquatch file"!

Hmmmm .... I used to do those exact same things when I was a kid. Well, I never crapped in a bag ... my dog provided that. You are right that obviously the little jerks have too much time on their hands, but it may not be because their parents are worthless. I know it wasn't that way in my case. I was just a squirrel and did stupid things. When mom found out about them I got a real bad case of the scarlet derrier though. No if's, and's or but's about it.

I don't think it is anything that necessarily needs LEO involvement (yet)but a good scare from someone waiting for the little dufus's when they got home might cure the problem. Then again ... this is a different world where the police are expected to fix everything that parents can't .

Is it really that bad???

I was a mischievous child (didn't have a wood shed, momma used a mimosa limb) Also, we didn't pick on one person repeatedly... spread it around the neighborhoods...

No it is not. Tampering with the delivery of the US Mail is the offense.

My kids school has permission to wear my kids behinds out if they get out of control. Have heard of several boys in my boys class that have felt the wrath of the paddle from the principal. Small town life, no hand coddling garbage around here.

Spanking, wish that was all I got as a kid. I got full on beatings....parents were experts in the field however, no incriminating hand marks ever left. Taught me respect, called a good friend Mr for over two years and finally last year started to call him by his first name. People I meet and deal with are Sir, Maam, Mr, Mrs. I think that is being lost with our up and coming generations.

As far as the mailbox goes. I'd lay out in her front yard in all black clothes, camo paint and lie in wait for the dirty little b........buggers. Better if you could lie in concealment and have a bag of M80's on hand one big fuse, aquired at your local radio shack I believe and tie it up to about 5 of them and wait.......it would be even better if you could wire them up to go off with the push of a button, that way the lighter and fuse buring would not give away the soon to come underwear soiling by said hoodlums.

Off subject but funny. I had a goat I had to catch in the field one time. Could not run her down, tease her with feed but needed to catch her that afternoon. So I put on my homemade gilly suit and layed belly down near the path she would take. It started to rain, wind picked up and then it got cold. I layed there for about 45 minutes soaking wet when she casually walked in front of me....BAMMMMM!!!!!!!! I grabbed her leg and I think she pooped!!!! Then started to yell as I hauled her butt to the barn. Told my wife about it and she said "you did what?" and I showed her where I was laying at and she laughed and said she had wondered where I went to and saw something strange over in the bushes. Yeah, I'm a bit off at times.....

Sorry, did'nt mean to hijack the thread, but that's what I would do....what satisfaction to scare the livin daylights out of the little turds. Then they'd never be back for fear of you laying out there in wait...just for them. Plus it sounds like a heck of a lot of fun....hey, can I come play!!

I did the what I'm supposed to today. I had a meeting with the day shift sergeant for our area and he filled out a patrol request for all shifts informing them of the problems. For now, I guess I'll play by the rules. Pistol, I think you have to involve law enforcement as early as possible, the paper trail is a must. In the big picture, there are more problems here than what we've discussed. Collectively we need to paint the picture as clearly as possible so if it continues we can go higher up the ladder and have all the documentation necessary to try and effect a change. To address an earlier comment concerning mail delivery, damage to a mail receptacle is punishable on the federal level however and most often, as a rule it is handled on the local level based on the dollar value of the damage. This is done because the usual intent of the vandal is just that, vandalism. They typically have no desire to interfere with the delivery of the mail, they just want to tear something up. Prosecutors also do not want to clutter the federal system with busted mailboxes.

Kids have been knocking on doors and running away since the beginning on time. Kids like the rush like watching a horror movie. They will probably grow up to be politicians.

Thumbs up Can't just lock 'em up in sheds anymore

Everything is about escalation these days. It's like playing "uncle" as a game when we were kids. Just these days they use the word "assault". Only the smart ones move on and don't repeat the same offense or to the same victim. Then again they aren't that smart to begin with if they're doing that anyway. Letting the SO know is the right thing to do. I'm sure if the right thing to do isn't what we WANT to do then at least your complaint was in the system before the report involving a creepy guy scaring "good" kids not doing anything wrong at night in the neighborhood (what we want to do) is. As long as the Deputy knows your side first, I'd bet he wouldn't write up the offenders (bad kids) complaint.

Chris
