anyone else do this? i just got back from the gun store, looked at a ruger super blackhawk DA with scope-$495, ruger blackhawk DA with rings but no scope-$425, and a ruger blackhawk SA with scope -$375. all these were stainless steel with 7.5 inch barrels, 44 mag. i'm leaning towards the SA, due to both price and it had better grips, and i'm not entirely i need double action for deer hunting. i would like to be able to hit decent to 75 yards, will these guns do that? i've shot 44 mags before, just never trying for accuracy. i like rugers, so......? i should just buy one, right? which of the aforementioned guns would you buy?
before my eyes got old, used a ruger sa 357maximum, deadly at 50 yds with good bullet placement, still carry it when I gotta drive...
Also used a TC in 35rem ( ss ), with a scope. Great from a tree stand with
a rest, needed the rest for the long eye relief scope,
Now my age is showing, so got a 18 inch barrel (256w)made for the tc and
a rifle stock, almost like carrying a pistol The gun is a 200 yd shooter.
Not me, the gun, Max for me 100yds...

I have the Ruger Super Redhawk with 7.5"barrel.
It works great for long range shooting. I've hit the target near 75 yards off hand with out a scope only using the open sights. I bought it just for that reason, longe range accuracy. Now I want the Ruger "Alaskan" 454. Short & powerfull for close range.
You must have allot of Deer if your considering not using a rifle.
I use my revolver for wild boar.
Have you seen the Super Redhawk? A little bit larger frame than the Blackhawk, but the Blackhawk is good too.

The DA's you refer too- don't you mean redhawk/super redhawk? Either way, the .44 mag is plenty for deer, at 75 yards and beyond. Myself, I prefer a single action. I have a Super BH Hunter (with bisley grip frame) and a Freedom Arms .454 Casull. As far as a scope or no scope, I think it's personal preference. A large revolver is just much easier to carry without a scope imo.
Heres a pic with my Freedom Arms.

rifles are not legal in indiana, well, sort of. this year they are going to allow rifles chambered in straight-walled pistol ammo of .357 or larger. other than that, just muzzleloaders, shotguns or bows. oh, or pistols, like the one i want. i will look at the TC's tommorow, and the redhawks. the guy didn't show me any redhawks, but i'm sure he has them. trouble is i want to buy one used to keep the price down, so the selection is not as great as if i were buying new.

same here too, its cause rifles have alot of travel and we have alot of people in ohio, too much of a chance of hitting a house. i hunt with my 36 year old .44 mag 7.5 barrel ruger super blackhawk 3 screw model i picked up for 425$, i also hunt with my ruger GP100 6 3/8 barrel .357 full stainless i picked up for 400$, both have open sights, sadly now i will be moving to florida to hunt german shephar...ooops i mean deer, sorry, i mistake them alot down there cause they are about the same size. i love having the big bucks up here. i havent had a full season of deer hunting under my belt since 2002, 2003 and up til now ive been in college that week.
I have shot several .44mags and have actually killed a couple wild hogs with mine. My advice would be to go heavy and ported. It helps with accuracy and how fun the gun is to shoot. I have a Taurus Raging Bull .44mag with a 8 3/8" barrel that is ported. It is doesn't have much of a kick compared to the Ruger I shot before. just my .02 cents
I think Indiana's Law was written in the mindset of humting rather than the sporting/trophy hunting aspect. Regardless, shotgun hunting with slugs does take down deer.
I have a Thompson Contender that I hunt with, I like having the ability to change barrels/amo caliber depending on what I'm hunting. I have a mounted scope as well. It is much nicer to haul it around in the soods/wherever weight wise as compared to a 30-30, 30.06 or 45.70, all of which I have and rarely use these days as the Contender does the job well. Having a single-shot pistol certainly brings new meaning to making every shot count, but it is also more sporting as far as evening things out with defenseless game.
