I used to have a pet garter snake that I caught. Had it for about 2 months before I set it free.

Yeah, I'm terrified of them too. Oh wait, that's jealous, er ah, nevermind.
Here's one I caught coming up from the river. I catch about six a year and turn loose under the house.

Use to hunt them for fun when I was a kid. Once in awhile I run across a hog-nosed snake in the yard and I'll make him put on his show. This is the time of the year we'll get HUGE blue racers dead on the road. They come out of the cold woods and lay on the hot pavement.

Hog noses are cool to play with. Old timers use to call them puff adders and blowin vipers and such.

When I was a counselor at summer camp for the boy scouts, we use to catch them and tell the kids they were Michigan Cobras. One kid got swatted by the tail and thought he had 7 minutes to live.

Heres one my Dad killed last year. Being on a ranch, we kill lots of rattlesnakes and copperheads. I killed a 6' copperhead last year also. The non poisonous ones usually live. Oh, and ignore how redneck I look in this picture.

if they are poisonous, they die then and there, if they kill the poisonous ones and aren't by the house they live, but if my dog gets ahold of them, I guess their life is in his hands, not mine. I won't come between my dog and a snake.

snakes are great, breaded and fried, i used to have all kinds of snakes as pets, best are garden snakes and black snakes, the black snakes keep the mice away, i got a buddy that goes to UC in cincy and his friend has a farm just outside the city, we was down there and i was pickin this baby garden snake up and kissing it and letting it crawl all over me, those city people were freakin out, one girl almost passed out when i chased her with it.

I didnt either. But my brother and I were driving by another guy that works for us, and he was yelling snake. so we went over there. Sure enough, tangled in their lanscaping net, was a snake. So I killed it and dragged it out. Picked it up, held tail over my head and the head hit the ground. And Im just a tick under 6'.

The non-poisonous snakes are so beneficial that to randomly kill them is bordering on immoral. The poisonous ones have their uses, too, but I am not so forgiving when one crosses my path.
That photo is of a Diamond Back Rattler, not a copperhead. Diamond pattern on back, stripey tail, rattles, Smashed head.
Most embarrased snake I ever saw, had a jack rabbit halfway donw, when we came across it. We stood there and watched it go down. Amazing. Full sized Jack, 4 foot Rattler. He kept looking out of one eye at us like "I hope they don't bother me, I'm eatin'"
