SMOKE ??
I was always told that diesels that are pouring out the black smoke are just wasting alot of unburnt fuel. any truth to this ?? whats the theory on .. to smoke or not to smoke??? later guys, scott
Re:SMOKE ??
True. BLACK smoke = unburnt fuel. So...while smoke may look cool....it means your engine isn't burning fuel efficiently...which means you're not making the power that you could be.
Re:SMOKE ??
You could back off the fueling down low to help with that (I don't know how you UNDERvalved people do that
). On a PROPERLYvalved engine
, you'd adjust the low boost fueling levels on your box (if you have one) down. Stock, diesel's don't smoke much, if at all.

Can you help it when it puts out smoke because your around 1100 rpm and rising but not at the point to build boost yet?

You can try to adjust the AFC a little lower. The AFC starwheel is under a plug to open with an 8mm allen on the back of the pump. Rotating the top of the starwheel towards the engine gives more fuel under low boost, away from the engine less fuel under low boost. Reducing fuel under low boost will increase turbo lag a bit- if you have too much fuel at low boost you will douse the fire in the cylinder and therefore lose pwer too. I'd go and try to adjust some clicks away from the engine and go for a test ride. If you make a note of the clicks you have doen you can go back to the former setting. (This is the free lunch)
If you want to do it properly you can either go for a smaller exhaust housing to increase spoolup, but you'll lose top end flow and may run into EGT troubles. Or really properly you can do twins, 4K GSK, AFC mod, valet switch, injectors, O-ringed head etc ;D
