How about a little more info? Like year, fuel inj/carb, ignition. Chevy has been making the small block since 1955 so there's just a little variety out there.

oh no, they're all the same but, if you mean its not turning over fast enough, battery or alternator. if it takes too long to get running, fuel, either too much or too little, or weak spark. which could also be battery/alternator

Plugged fuel filter can cause the hard start, enough to run, just starts flowing slow. Especially on the 80's trucks. Seen it a million times.

MSD ignition module can do wonders for it. Also go through your carb to clean and adjust per specs. [especially the choke adjustment]. If it's an older engine then a basic tuneup is needed to get everything in balance. There's no shortcut to point by point test procedures to troubleshoot actual problems. That is it's pretty hard to fix a problem when you don't know what it is.

Every minute spent trouble shooting a problem will save at least an hour of work head scratching.

Plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and fuel filter come to mind, unless it is a fully electronic ignition. If it is a TBI they can be a little slow to start, if it is a carb then you may have more work to do. I had a 95 Chevy 350 and with fresh plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and fuel filter, it fired right up. That's about all I got!

good luck

Also, check the timing. Too much advance will make it crank over slower also. So I guess make sure you have given it a good tune up and make sure everthing is to spec.

We need some more info please Hard starting can be a caused by a lot of different reasons.......is it acting like it's not getting fuel to the carb or what's it doing?

First thing I would check is the carb. I've seen them loose on the manifold sometimes and they suck air. If the carb is tight it's another vote for timing/ ignition.

Last time I looked, cheby never made a 318. Made things like a 283, 302, 305, 327(both SJ and LJ). Ooopps, forgot about the oddballs. 307, 305, and others I wish too forget. Something like a 265?

Dang, I now I am going through withdrawles(sp). Wish I would have never gotten rid of my '66 Nova.

you forgot the best of them all.. the 350.. and of course the 400 that likes to over heat with those ingenius steam ports..

Then to make the 350 better a 400 crank in a 350 Had this one running for 150K when I sold it... Lots of torque and dependable.
