Shotgunners
For those who eat, sleep, and dream shotguns. I have a Mossberg 500, is there any noticeable difference between a $65 Briley choke and a $15 Mossberg choke?
I guess what Im asking basically is, What do I look for in good accessories for my shot gun? I bought it as a field gun, not a show gun for the trap shoots. Not that there is anything wrong with having a nice gun for trap shooting, its just not my thing.

I don't eat, sleep, or dream shotguns (anymore), but I'd buy the Mossberg tubes for a field gun.
That being said, I do have a set of Briley tube's for my Browning O/U trap gun.

What makes the Briley (or any other brand) worth three times as much?
I do however believe that putting a high dollar part on a piece of low dollar equipment is usually a waste of money.

For the record, I have nothing against a Mossberg 500 pump, and I've been known to carry an old JC Higgins 12 ga pump in the field myself.

The Briley at midway says they stick out of the barrel, but the mossberg do not.

What are you shooting at? If you were having troubles with your pattern, you might give the briley a try, but otherwise the factory chokes should do fine. I bought a patternmaster tube for my 10 gauge because I didn't like how the factory chokes shot with steel BB's, helped alot. I was getting a fair number of cripples, now it smashes em dead in mid air.

Im new at the whole scatter gun thing.
I have shot a whole 5 shots thru my gun at card board. Once at 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 yrds. It looks effective out to 30, and it will get a couple pellets in a bird at 40. All of this with managed recoil remingtons in size 7-1/2. I haven't tried anything else yet to see what the gun reallly likes.

If you're planning at shooting at stuff further out (anything much over 30 yds) you want a fairly tight choke and bigger shot. Might not be as much of a consideration down there, but up here the winter set of feathers is considerably thicker on some birds than the early fall ones, takes more oomph to kill the bird there too.
Fronty, whats the game you're after? Is it up and close shooting, or longer range.
No matter what, I'd save some money and buy those Mossberg tubes and see how they pattern with various sizes of shot at increasing ranges. Only then you will know how your shotgun performs.
If the tubes are giving what appears to be poor patterns, thats when you should go the next step and try another manufacturer. Note that some "chokes" may vary from one maker to another. And even if you have two Modified chokes from the same maker, they may perform differently in your shotgun due to production tolerances.
Way back when, I spent the extra cash on the Brileys because I could screw them in and out with my fingers - no tube wrench needed. Plus I thought the silver finish looked good on the end of the barrels. I have a couple of sets from skeet all the way to extra full.

Most of my shooting is at skeets (just because its convienent)
Game wise will be dove, quail, tree rat, and rabbit. I just got back from the range and the gun seems to do pretty well out to about 25 or 30 yrds. Up close, I could get a good shatter, after about 15 yrds, I couldn't shatter, just knock off chips.
This was with Remington Value pack ammo in 7-1/2 shot size. I haven't had the gun long enough to really try many shot sizes or brands of ammo.
I do know, I want a full choke and hi-viz sights.

For skeet and trap I use number 8s, 1 1/4 oz, 3 dram and it smokes the clays. And the value packs are not as good as the gun store ammo. Just what I have noticed during my time shooting clays. HTH.
