Shot a Sika deer this morning
Yessir, I smoked a nice sika stag with my TC omega this morning on the marsh. Came splashing up under my stand, couldn't see what it was in all the marsh grass and briars. Then it ran farther out on the marsh, and I stopped it by grunting with my voice and shot it. Tough little rascal, he stopped a 250 grain shockwave, and still turned and ran 50 yards. Found the bullet under the skin on the far shoulder. First one I've seen while hunting, saw a couple others while dragging it out. I'm going back Monday, I can't stand it. There's some monster whitetails out there too, I'm scared to shoot one now, thinking about that 300 yard drag back to the boat.
Don't know how to post them. I got a couple really cool pics of the marsh from my deer stand this morning, on my cell phone. Took some of the deer with the regular digital camera, gotta figure out how to get them on here.
Great job and yes we need more Deer pics.
I haven't got a deer yet this season. Gonna have to shoot a doe I guess so I can get some jerky, summer sausage, and bacon. Boy that makes my mouth water thinking about it.

Well, I can't stand it. Got the boat hooked up, ready to go. No buddies this time, gonna do it alone. 20 mins in truck, 40 minute boat ride, 20 minute stumble across the marsh, 10 minute wrestling match with climbing stand, etc. Can't wait, should be a great morning tomorrow. Shot my rifle at 150 yards yesterday, shoots 7" low. Now I'm ready, all Sika's beware. Smack down is coming. All I need now is a theme song! Like the jaws music. Got my new thermos too. It's on now....
I can't wait till this Saturday when are season opens for deer and bear. Their is two big bucks bedding a few hundred yards behind my house, hopefully we get are kills the first day and then can go back out for bear.
Here is a deer that was killed in Adams County,Ohio it a 33pt
non-typical buck,
it scored a 294 6/8 w/ 24.5 inch spread, but only weighed 180-190lbs.
I got the story off of Huntyonly.com

I have a monster like that living on my mountain, I have been watching him progress over the years. I don't hunt him, sure I have thought about it, but thats the only reason he is still alive to breed.
My neighbor saw him 2 years ago, standing in my yard, he was stuttering when he told me about him I just acted like I didn't know he was that big
My wife saw him standing in the drive way 2 days ago, he crosses to a pond on one side of the mountain and beds on back side out of the wind.
First time I saw him I was putting a scope on a custom rifle I built for a guy. I had the rifle sighted down the driveway, and he stepped right into the cross hairs. I did a double take because I thought it was something that came with the scope
Like a picture of a huge buck on the lens.
It wasn't a picture, and it took a lot of nerve not to slide a round in that rifle, I could have shot him right out the window. Every year I think maybe I should take him before somebody else does, then I smile and think how many guys would fight for the chance to harvest a buck like this.
I guess he has kinda got into a soft spot with me, two old warriors living on the mountain, I think I will just let him be.

that takes alot of self control and respect for the animal to let a big one like that live. i know some guys who are die-hard hunters day in and day out and they have monsters who eat corn in their backyard but they wont take those because its too easy. they let those have their way and they hunt the sneaky ones way back in the sticks.
hahhaa, now im going to search high and low ont he net for Top's address

Oh I have pics, but don't know how to put em on here. I will eventually, I'm sure. Hunting close to home, on MD's Eastern Shore (By God). That's all I'm saying! Someone will be parked up in my stand first morning of rifle season otherwise!
(Hunting in Dorchester county, MD. Lots of Sikas in certain areas.)
The truck is still hooked to the boat, I was talking to a buddy last night late, he mentioned that the rest of this week is whitetail does only, no bucks, and no Sikas either. I almost cried. I woke up at 3:30 anyway, and stared at the truck and waved sadly. The Sikas are safe now until rifle season starts Thanksgiving weekend, then it will be on. ON, I tell you.

An article says some were imported from Japan and released in 1916 by a landowner. If you type sika deer MD into google, some good links pop up. Pretty neat, I've never messed with them before, and I was after a big whitetail on the marsh, but I sure didn't waste any time shooting that one when I saw it. Saturday morning was a fun hunt, there was an awesome meteor shower from about 4:30 til it started getting light, I remember sitting in the tree at about 6am and watching the meteors (one every 5 seconds) and listening to the sikas bugling out in the marsh. They sound just like little elk.
Now, if a buck like the one from Ohio had stepped out, I think I'd have had to shoot it instead. That thing is huge! There's some real monsters out in that marsh though, every year a few come in that score above 165 B&C. This is my year, I hope. Time to break out of my 120-130" 8 and 10 pt phase, and start killing some big ones. I saw a nice little 8 pointer in the woods Friday afternoon, looked about 16" inside, but I think there's a hoss on that farm, so I'm not killing anything there until the last week of the second black powder season, in December.

Timberman, are you going to get it mounted? That'd be a cool hunt, too bad we dont have anything like that down near the OBX, I reckon we've got wild horses though, haha. Oh yeah, one of my friends killed an African black buck a couple of years ago while bow hunting down in Nags Head, there is a guy around there that has animals like that in a pen, and we reckon it got out, and my buddy saw it one evening, and shot it the next. He cut off the horns, and put them in some water to rot off, and his dog dragged them off somewhere and he cant find them
Do you get tags for them, or how does that work. As you can tell, I'm kinda interested in them

No, you don't need special tags or anything. Just a MD license, I think out of state is around $120 for the season, a little less for a 3 day. The lower counties of the Eastern Shore all have Sikas, Dorchester has the most, followed by Wicomico and Worcester. There are outfitters that specialize in them, might have some luck there, also Assateague Island national park has tons of them, they have some special rules on hunting, but it can be done. If you ride out on the beach at night (need a offroad permit) they're all over. I've actually hit one with a beer bottle there, they're not scared of traffic at all. (I was only trying to get his attention, I don't condone drunken wildlife abuse, not much anyway).
Their rut is on now, but the daggone blackpowder season only lasts 3 days. You'd have it tough if you tried to bow hunt them out where I was, I recommend waiting for that same October season to roll around again next year. Now that I'm a seasoned Super Sika Stag Slayer Supreme, (I'm changing my handle) I'd be glad to try to put you on one next year. Just send me a PM if you'd like to give it a try, Nags Head is only about 4 hours from here. That's all I can think about now. Sika this, Sika that. I'm gonna try to kill another one during our 2 week rifle season the end of november, but might not see as many since they won't be in rut. Got a line on a custom made Sika call, might have to give it a try. How cool would that be, to bugle one up.
I hunted a new farm tonight, there is a regular squirrel jamboree going on in there. That many squirrels in one locale should be illegal. I snuck back to the field edge right at dark, with the wind in my face, and there were two big deer that took off running so fast, I almost started running too. I think they had just noticed my truck parked way across there, and were like
I don't see how they could possibly have heard or smelled me, I had on so much scent lock I looked like the michelin man, and the wind was blowing pretty hard so I doubt they heard me. They'll pay for that though, startling me like that.
Nah, not gonna mount it, just gonna save the skull. The horns are only like 2" tall, but it was an old stag. His bases are almost as big as a whitetail's, and the little horns are only right in the very centers of the bases. He weighed between 95 and 100 lbs, as far as we can tell. Kinda the size and build of a decent sized rotweiler. Thought about saving the hide, but got lazy and just ripped it off.
