Septic tank trouble?
Correct, the roof vent connects to the drain lines.

That wikipedia symptoms sounds just like mine. Slow draining tub, toilet will flush but gets sucked down when tub drains, sounds like it is trying to get air. Thanks for all the help. Sorry for thread hijack.

If there is nothing in the vent then it should flow directly down and out.
The vent line is T-d into your drain line with a sanitary T. If that is clogged above the T then it will come back up the vent. If it is below than you could be looking at the water coming up into whatever vent that is feeding.
A lot of times if it is only a partial clog a toilet auger or plunger cant clear the obstruction. Snaking would be the next choice.
I would also say that if you are not having any issues any where else in the house than it could be that toilet. Slow flushing can also be a problem of clogged jets in the toilet. Assuming you are on a well because you are on a septic, it is very common for mineral to get caught in the jets holes. Especially if you don't have a water treatment system.

My septic tank had the entire top collapse in on itself Friday. The system is still working fine though. New tank getting installed Thursday, $2,600 complete. Just when I get 2 nickels to rub together, it never fails doesn't it.

Hvytrkmech, I had that happen 3 years ago. I thought the smell was coming from the neighbors' dairy farm. The lid had never even had a push mower go over it, well maybe, but nothing heavier then a person.
I had it pumped out, then flushed with the garden hose, pumped again, and then took my trencher/back hoe and pulled the concrete out.
I put two 4x4 post in the tank and made a simple header, sheeted with plywood, reinforced with a "hog panel", and two ramps I had from an old trailer project and mixed about 25 bags of sacrete. Used a plastic wash basin as the form for the clean out hole, then filled the basin with conc. and stuck a bent piece of rebar for a lift handle.
I didn't spend $100, but I had to be creative, and that didn't include the pumping cost.
The original lid had no rebar or steel of any kind. I was there 30 years.
I had helped a friend fix his when the water truck crushed it. That's were I got the idea.
Hey, that pumper guy came out on a Sat AM, had is girl friend with him! They were a pair!!

Actually, the shower (which is 5' away from this commode) is fartherest from the septic tank (think of the commode as the vice president and the shower as Nobama)
. I only have 1 vent which is on this commode (my other stuff has pro-vents). Everything has been fine for the past 10 years but I guess things fail. The septic tank is a homemade job that was built in the 50's so I guess it has already lasted past its useful life. I'll try the water hose thing this weekend and hopefully that'll take care of it.

D2 Cat, I was pondering an idea like that myself. My tank is behind my house in the most traveled part of my back yard. So for safety and fear of a sidewall collapse I opted for a new tank. I think I will build some type of 4x4 support for the top so I can ride my tractor over it.
Thanks for sharing your idea.

Hamilton, if you have an access port on the toilet down pipe try snaking it. Or cleaning the water trap? That toilet is the only issue still, correct? No overflow at any other drains?

Yep, just that one commode. I can snake it from the roof or I can just pull it and snake it from the floor...which might be easier. I might monkey with it this weekend.
Mine turned out to be a full tank. The output line was clogged with roots. So much better now.
No vents in my house except for the Edit, the kitchen and washer stuff Is not running to the tank, I have them running into a rock bed deep in the ground. They need a vent in a bad way, you guys have any ideas on how to vent them w/o having to put one through the roof?
