Scam Warning!!!

I have a D6 Cat for sale and have advertised it in the local trader paper and online at their site. Last night I received this email:

Name: Jordan Evans
Phone:
Email: evanszq03@gmail.com

Question
Hi,Do you still have it for sale? i will like to make an offer of the exactely amount you want to sell it,payment will be made through paypal and i will arrange for the pick up as well. Cheers, Jordan.

I replied that I still have it and when he would need it, and this is the response I got:

Hi thanks for mailing back,i am an oceanographer, i am at sea right
now,i am buying this for my son as a surprise gift and I am glad you
accepted my offer.I can only pay through paypal at the moment as i
dont have access to my bank account online(i dont have internet
banking with it),but i have it attached to my paypal account, and this
is why i insisted on using paypal to pay,all i will need is your
paypal email address to make the payments, and if you dont have a
paypal account yet,its pretty easy to set one up at www.paypal.com.i
will be expecting your email.I have a pick up agent that will come for
the pick up after payments has been sorted.

I didn't pick up that this was a scam until after I sent him my paypal email adress and I got suspicious...

So don't be stupid like I was if you see something like this!!! I've reported it to the RCMP but I have doubts as to whether or not I'll ever hear about any outcome...

On edit,
Mods - I have included this fraudster's email so that others can pick up on it, it has been posted on the web as a scam email at a few forums that I found when I put it into a goole search. Please remove it if it is not appropriate for this thread. Thanks.

Thanks for the warning. I see this kind of stuff all the time. My lil bro was trying to sell his sport bike on Craiglist and had something similar come across.

Gotta love when you come home and have a new dozer waiting for you....

Suprise!

Yeah, happens all the time. When I sell something anywhere I always prefer cell phone contact. Emails that say "item", "this", "it" referring to what you are selling is always suspicious.

I use PayPal but I use the built in billing system. If I want to buy something I have them send me a payment request through PayPal. It works the same way for selling stuff.

I can add:
Do not reply to Craigs list adds that only have an email address to reply to. I did that once and got buried in spam and the person never replied.

Craigslist is rife with spambots trolling for addresses and phone numbers. You can mess with them and delete 90% or more of the scammers by breaking up how you write your address and phone number. Instead of writing 555-5555 as your number, either add (no spam) somewhere in there or alternate words and numbers. 555-55(no spam)55 or 555-five five 5 five. I've gotten to where I just block anything from gmail.com as the scammers love it. I also don't allow e-mail through the ad. They have to go by decoding the address. For instance, instead of the appendage "@aol.com" you can write "at Ay Oh El dot com". If someone is really interested, they can decode it but it baffles the spambots.

Wow, just yesterday this same scam showed up in my email again... This time his name is Robert Hardey and he's an engineer working on an oil rig... The rest of the story's the same though... I'm doing the scambaiting trick with him now, it's been pretty entertaining so far... Would it be against the rules to put up our correspondence here for the member's enjoyment?
Cheers!

Not at all.....providing the correspondence is of a nature that will not violate forum rules such as profanity

Ok, here it is... Unfortunately my scammer seems to have lost interest so what you see is where it ended. But oh well... His emails have been coloured blue and mine are red... I hope my name isn't too offensive... I've copied this from my facebook page where other fans have been keeping track of it:

So this scammer is thinking he can con me out of some money... I'm gonna have some fun with this guy and keep y'all posted! Here's what he sent me in reply to an ad I have and what I wrote back. My email name for this is Yuben Yankinov...

Name:Robert HardeyPhone:Email:roberthardey@gmail.comQuestion
hi, do you still have the machinery up for sales? i will like to make an offer of the listed price, payment will be made via paypal and i will also arrange for the pick up well. cheers Robert Hardey

Here's Yuben's reply:
Hi Robert,
I still have that machinery up for sales indeed! I just gots divorced and my ex wife makes me sell everything I have because she wants all my money! Let's make a deal!
Thank you,
Yuben Yankinov

I'll keep updating this as it plays out, should be lots of fun I hope!
-----
Update Aug. 2, 2010. Woke up this morning to find the following email in my inbox:

Thank for the prompt response to my mail, I am an engineer working on a petroleum rig offshore and will not be able to buy in person.i intend buying this for my son and i appreciate you accepted my offer.I can only pay through PayPal at the moment as i don't have access to my bank account online(i don't have internet banking with it),but i have itattached to my PayPal account. All i will need is your paypal email or a money request so i can make the payment, and if you don't have a PayPal account yet,its very easy to set up at WWW.PayPal.com,iwill be expecting your email.i will contact a pick up personnel now and make arrangements on how to pick up asap right after the payment has been transfered in to your account.

Best Regard
robert hardey.

So I let him wait until this afternoon, then I wrote him this email:

Hi Robert,

I'm glad to hear from you! I do already have a paypal account with a $50,000USD limit so that won't be an issue! I will need you to fill out and return the attached purchase agreement before I can give you my paypal account email as my ex wife, who will ultimately get the money from this sale, requires records of me selling all my assets. Her lawyer is adamant that I have a purchase agreement and he has inventoried all of my assets. I trust this will be alright with you.

Thank you,

Yuben
[/COLOR]

I also attached a purchase agreement I concocted... We'll see if he falls for it. The way this scam works is that they try to get your paypal account email. They then send an email that looks like a legitimate paypal email with a link to a login site. The link will take you to his site where you input your username and password. Once he has those he will log in to your paypal and send himself as much money as he possibly can, and there aint anything you can do about it. This is why I mentioned in my email to him that my paypal account has a $50,000USD limit to keep him interested... Should be interesting!

---

Update!
Wow, after only 5 minutes I get this email back:

can you do the filling yourself in as much as you are the one cashing out the money?...let me know asap

I sent him a "Purchase agreement" asking for his adress, phone number, social security number, credit card number, spouse's name, children's names and a few other things... Here's what I wrote back:

I could but I don't have any of this information, this is YOUR information that YOU must fill in.
Thank you.

Moments later I got this email:

i am not in any way gonna do that for safety purpose as i hope you understand better.

Ok, so he's not quite as dumb as I thought... So here's what I wrote back:

Yes, I certainly understand, it's just a formality that my ex wife's lawyer wants me to do. No problem, I think we can work around it, I won't be able to ask him until tomorrow, it is a holiday here today. I think your adress and telephone number should be enough to make him happy, can you please send me that at least?
Thanks,
Yuben.

So far it's been 2 days and no answer... Too bad, I was having fun with him... Maybe he'll try again next week, the ad for my cat will run for at least 2 more weeks...

Hopefully he will get greedy and get back with you. Or maybe he dropped dead like I wish all those scammers would do.
