SCAM/Identity Theft Problem
My personal thought is that ( name of bank omitted to avoid libel ) lost some info!

I received a call from this number (323)474-0044 at my work and then on my cell phone on 11/11/2009 at 1700 hours, claiming at first to be from "The Law Offices of Jackson and Rose". A thick accented man told me that I was "the prime suspect" in some sort of criminal action and that a team of police would be at my house to arrest me at 1130 today! ( they are late I guess)
I called back asking what this was about, and the guy refused to give me his name, and swore at me. I continued calling back, for a total of 11 times! During our many brief conversations, he told me that he was initially with the "crime investigations unit" and when asked what law enforcement agency that was with, hung up on me.. I was then told he was with "Jacob Morrison Law Office", and that this was in reference to a payday loan I had allegedly taken out and not repaid ( sorry, never took one). He continued to claim a warrant had been issued on me and that I needed to pay him $200 immediately to "avoid process of court and arrest".
I continued calling him back, since he kept hanging up on me when asked for details about this and he wound up calling me several colorful names, and hanging up on me repeatedly..
During one of these calls when I was asking for the name of the company I supposedly owed money to and the account number, he said I would "get my a** kicked", as well as calling me a son of a ****.
When I told him it was illegal for him to threaten me with criminal action, he said he didnt care and I was a ****-head.
The scary part is that he had my home address as well as the last four digits of my social security number, and I am afraid that this information has been stolen somehow.
If you receive a similar call, be aware that it appears thousands of people may have had their info stolen and report it to your local police as well as the Federal Trade Commission!
WALLINGFORD, CT, August 07, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about would-be debt collectors who call "payday" loan holders, threatening arrest if they don't pay immediately.
A payday loan, also known as a paycheck advance, is a short-term cash advance intended to cover expenses until the holder's next payday.
The callers claim they are lawyers with the "Financial Accountability Association" or the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans," and they are armed with stolen personal information from their victims, indicating a major security breach of unknown origin. The names used by the scammers may change with time.
According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau President, Paulette Scarpetti, payday loan holders appear to be particularly at risk.
"Because the scammers have so much information about potential victims, BBB is concerned that this may be the result of a data breach. Thousands of people may have had their personal information compromised."
Reports received by Better Business Bureau and posted online explain the con artists threaten the loan holders of defaulting and claim they are being sued. The imposters threaten the loan holders with imminent arrest and extradition to California to stand trial, unless they immediately wire $1000 or provide bank account or credit card information.
Connecticut Better Business Bureau has advice for consumers who receive suspicious telephone calls about an outstanding debt:
-Don't be bullied into immediate action. Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation that substantiates the debt.
-Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the telephone until you confirm the legitimacy of the call.
-If you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you, file an abuse complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at www. ftc.gov, or by telephone at (202) 326-2222. Also file a complaint with your Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org or by telephone at 203-269-2700, ext. 2.

the bad thing is that for $50 online if I had your full name, I could get all of your information including SSN! Best thing to do is join Life Lock. I have it and it has saved my tail a couple times. I forget that I have it until I go apply for credit and they come back and tell me that my SSN does not come up with ANYTHING and then I get a call on my cell from Life Lock stating that someone is trying to run my credit and if I am the one applying and if so they will hand force my credit report thru to the agency.

I am paying $100 for a year. It is cool cause I got a letter from my mortgage holder that an employee had been caught selling THOUSANDS of customers personal info down to address, SSN etc... I called LifeLock and asked if there was anything I needed to do and they ran a quick check on things and said, NOPE, you are good to go. They had been getting a lot of calls from the same incident and told me not to worry. I am not getting any more credit card offers anymore either. Junk mail is down to just the local coupons and nothing else. kinda nice in that aspect too
