Ruger 10/22 semi automatic.

So I'm looking at picking up a new rifle for plinking, popping gophers and other small varmits around the place.

I'm thinking .22 cal because it's dirt cheap and quiet ammo, more than adequate for gophers. (I use 12 guage when I feel lazy)

Thinking of the Ruger 10/22 as they seem to be VERY common with gopher hunters around here.

What's your oppinion on this little rifle?

I'm also thinking of getting the classic blue barrel and wood stock, it's cheap and traditional.

What is really the advantage of the stainless and synthetic stock combinations?

Great.

No problems with the action? (I've never had a semi automatic before)
Do you put bird shot in it for the grouse?

Never had a problem one with it. I even have a 50rd mag for playing with. Even after the whole 50 goes through it in less than a minute it never misses a beat.

Bird shot for a 22? Never heard of such a thing. Put that little bullet in the bird's mellon.

Yeah that's what most guys do around here but somebody was telling me about little shot loads you can get for small birds in .22 cal. He said they look like contact C caplets.

Here is those shot shells, like I said I've never tried them. I was thinking of getting a few to maybe try on some partridge.

My 10/22 has had thousands of rounds through it. Still shoots great with nary a problem. It seems to like the CCI mini mags ammo the best.

My brother and I both have a 10/22, mine is the traditional blue/brown, great little gun. It handles as many rounds as I want to throw through it without a hitch. My brother bought a custom, yellow laminated stock, custom barrel, some crazy scope, his is REALLY accurate and shoots just as reliably as mine. Go get one, you will enjoy it!!

Thanks for the reccomendations guys.

Now the hard part...... Blue and wood or stainless and synthetic??

Decisions decisions.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has used the bird shot in them. I think that could do well for my pigeon problem.

They are great little shooters. You can get a basic one all they way up to one with a heavy target barrel from Ruger. I have a couple of them, one standard and that I built up that is pretty much a tack driver.

I own 2 Ruger 10/22's and never had a problem with them before. I use the 25 round hot lips clips with the crank speed loader all from Butler Creek. http://www.butlercreek.com/products/..._hot_lips.html Makes shooting a blast ( no pun intended). I have one with open sights and one with a 4X scope on it and they are equally fun. I'm going to buy a Charger next. They just look cool. http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Charger/index.html

You can't go wrong with either the stainless or blue. Make them open boxes for you until you find the right grain of wood that sets your fancy. You will be surprised at the differences.

Love the 10/22's.

Id go for a factory heavy stainless barrel with the natural laminate thumbhole stock. My opinion of course.

Have a good one.
