Riding Mower Oil Capacity ???

I have two hand-me-down riding mowers, both 42"-cut, both are Briggs/Stratton.

One is an old gray-colored Craftsman, engine says 12.5-HP, I/C-GOLD, CRAFTSMAN.

The other is green-colored Statesman, engine says 14.5-HP, I/C-QUIET.

My question is :

How much oil is required to fill the engine of each after I drain out all the old oil ??

Thanks.

I think I put 2 qts in my Craftsman. But it is a 18 HP Kohler motor. Get 3 and you'll be fine.

48 oz is its capacity. 4 oz for the filter

If you have adobe, heres a pdf file you can identify what the motors look like. Most all the bigger B&S engines take 48oz + filter capacity edit if it has a filter, w/o filter just 48oz for what you have Bearkiller

If you're in doubt and that have the dipstick tube down the side, just pull the tube off and fill there. You'll see how much of the dipstick extends past the tube, so you know how full to go.

Saves the trouble of pouring too much and having it fill all the way up into the tube.

I hadn't thought about that; I guess I could go that route, just remove the dip-stick tube and fill to level like we used to back when they had no fancy dip-stick tube.

Then I can "fine tune" after I replace the stick.

Where are these filters you guys are talking about ??

Thanks.

If it doesn't have a oil filter don't add 4 extra oz, it will only take 48oz in that case.

Were you able to view the pdf file?

Yes.

48-oz = 32-oz + 16-oz = 3-pints; right ??

Thank you.

For what it's worth, this one held a measured 44-oz of oil after a complete drain.

old gray-colored Craftsman, engine says 12.5-HP, I/C-GOLD, CRAFTSMAN.

I haven't tackled the Statesman yet.

Thanks for all your help.
