removing sleeves from 9N block
removing sleeves from 9N block
Anybody know a good way to get sleeves out of a block? Ive been told to weld a spiral bead around the inside of the sleeve and let it cool and it would pop right out.
Ford farm tractors do not have sleeves unless you are talking about the old 2N 8N 9N types. These kind you just peel out from the bottom of the cylinder with a long screwdriver. Some time if the engine has been rebuilt they bore the blocks and press in rough sleeves and bore them back to standard size. They do this because the ford casting are so pourous and they tend to leak coolant into the cylinders.
Hope this helps!

I guess I am lucky because I have access to a sleeve puller and that is the best way to remove them . They do not pull as hard on 9n's as most and I have seen a few old timers use a fine threaded rod and then make a plug that fits over the bottom edge of the sleeve . The hard part is making the plug to pull the sleeve it needs to fit real close . Put the new sleeves in the freezer before pressing them in and it will help a lot . Make sure the grove that the sleeve sits in is real clean so your protrusion comes out ok . You can usually buy a made puller plug for about $40 dollars our some dealers will let you borrow one sometimes . I have never done the welding idea but it sounds like it may work also .

All sleeves are different some fall right in , but most need to be hit with a soft hammer our with a wood block on top . I have never had to press them in once I put them in the freezer . You do not need to be real fast just take them out of the freezer as you put them in the holes . Check for cracks in the block were the sleeve goes before you put them in , if you find any put some locktite on the sleeve before putting them in and that sould stop any water leaks into the oil pan as long as they are not on the top our bottom .
A 9n is a old Ford gas tractor very close to and 8n our 2n made backin the 40's .
