Remington model 700 or 7??
Re:Remington model 700 or 7??
I think the .22-250 is perfect for women and young children to hunt deer with. It's all about bullet placement.
But, I wouldn't attempt to hog hunt with the .22-250. Boar is one tough animal.

Living on a ranch on the gulf coast of Texas, I have had the opportunity to kill many, many ferrel hogs. We are overrun with them. As a youngster, I shot them in the shoulder. When that got older, I vowed only to shoot headshots. When I go out checking my cows, (usually when I see them) I have one of three guns:
1. Colt AR-15 (.223)
2. Winchester M94 .22mag (my favorite by far, deadly accurate)
3. .220 Swift (long range, very accurate)
I have made many decisive head shots with each gun. Some of my best shots have been with the .22mag.
I have full confidence in the .22-250, my wife and I will have no problem killing anything with it. The key work here is "bullet placement".
thanks for everyones input. I appreciate it.

When we go run the dogs, I carry a .44mag lever action saddle gun. Its very short, has open sights, and has lots of take down power. Its a good little gun. Also, I carry a .357 on the hip. I would never carry my deer rifle into the woods, it would be too cumbersome. Gotta have something thats quick, with easy target aquisition.

The biggest hog I have ever taken was down in South Texas. 350+lbs. 6 rounds from my S&W M29 .44 mag to bring it down.
Last time I went hog hunting with a handgun.
My preferred deer/hog rifle is a Steyr Mannlicher M full length stock carbine in .270 Win.

I believe it. we jumped a hog about that size down in Tilden about 6 years ago. He killed 1 dog, and 1 hour after we jumped him, the dogs got him out into an old syndero, and he took 3 shots to the head with a .44 mad rifle like mine. He finally folder up on the third. He was huge!
If some of you dont know, these big hogs, 250+ lbs, have a shield of fat over shoulders that can be a minimum of 1" thick. You wanna talk about dulling a knife quick! That shield could stop a .22 caliber from penetrating.(i think so anyway)
Thats why aiming for the ear will get im on the ground every time!
SORRY FOR STRAYING OFF TOPIC.

Re:Remington model 700 or 7??
Thanks for eveyone's comments.
I am going to buy a .22-250 in the Remington Model700, Laminated Hard Wood stock, & Stainless Steel barrel.
I agree with some of you guys opinions on the .30cal being better for deer, but for my situation, the .22-250 will be fine for her. All her shots will be within 200yds, and that is plenty of room for a clean neck shot. If the need arises for a larger rifle (which will be in the stand anyway becuase we hunt together), then she can use mine. Other than that, my mind is made up.
My deer rifle is a .300 WinMag in the Remington Model700 BDL SS & Synthetic. 150grain CoreLoct. (soon to have a muzzle brake)
and if she doesnt like it, i will have a really nice varmint gun for myself!!!!! (this is one of those double sided gifts)
peace
Phillip

Re:Remington model 700 or 7??
I've kill many deer with my .22-250. All were one shot and ranges out to just over 500 yards. I had plenty of time to place the bullet in the proper place. Hunting with ANY caliber bullet, be it a .17 or .50 requires proper placement.
In the .224 calibers, bullet construction is very important. A lot of the .22-250's come with 12" twist and there are some with 14" twist. The .22-250 will stabilize a heavier bullet in the longer twist rates better than the .223 due to the greater velocity. Try some heavier bullets and see how they shoot and shoot the heaviest that will stabilize. I've found that the Sierras do better at longer ranges (over 250 yds) due to their jacket construction. They tend to be a bit explosive at closer ranges. The Speer and Hornady jackets are a bit heavier construction and hold together a bit better up close. Remington, so called, bullets are too finiky for me. It seems that they are overly fragile up close and don't expand reliably at longer ranges. Reguardless of what bullet you use, you want it to penetrate into the chest cavity before it comes unglued. When it does that, you don't have to worry about tracking one far. They usually drop in their tracks.

Re:Remington model 700 or 7??
You guys crack me up. Personally I dont consider a .22-250 good for anything bigger than sqirrels. Hell I shoot rockchucks with a .30-338 mag. I guess that explains why so many of the whitetails they shoot on the outdoor channel run off.
Probably the smallest caliber I would feel comfortable having a woman or kid shoot for deer would be a 25-06 with 117-120gr bullets. With a muzzlebreak a 25-06 or 270 kick about like a 243 with a lot more punch. BTW I shoot a .375-.358STA with 250 or 270gr bullets and I have seen a lot more bullet damage from the smaller calibers than my 375 and you dont have to chase 'em.
Palmetto,
It's good to see you picked a 700 over the 7 though as they tend to be slightly more accurate on average. Now just get a heavy barrel and you'll be set for squirrel ;D.

I'm with Nathan on this one. I have a 22-250 and a 220 swift...varmits don't stand a chance...but on larger game, I bring the size up...my all-time favorite is a 300 weatherby, but I have shot antelope and deer with my 25.06 and it pretty much drops them in their tracks. I have a 6mm in Rem M. 700, love it, too.
Most of my rifles are M77 rugers. Consistently accurate.
Elk don't go far when they get hit with my 350 rem mag... ;D

I think a lot of you guys are over estimating the size of the whitetail deer Pal.Kid is talking about. These aren't 300# Michigan deer. 100# is pretty big for that area. I used to hunt and killed scores of deer with a .222 Rem. in a Model 7. We're talking neck shots at 75 yards. Very efficient. Heck, a .22-250 is probably too much gun.

wow, its been a long time since ive seen that handle on this board! How ya doin Rick??
I ordered the gun saturday from a local guy who sells the guns from his house. I changed my mind though. I went with a Ruger M77 .25-06. Walnut/blued with a Nikkon 3.5x14x40 (i think that was the size). I wanted to get a SS/Synthetic, but she doesnt like them.(i dont know why) I walked out with the gun/scope/rings/t+t+l for $770. Pretty fair shake I think.

Hey, Phillip, I'm doing well. I don't get on here much, but I check in once in a while. Take care.
