I have the new model passport and love it. They also upgrade when a newer model comes out.

Oh and ya laser detection works well with the unit. Its more a laser being used alert. If the laser was directed directly at you its to late the speed has already been detected. But if the cop lasered the guy 20 cars ahead of you your detector will alert.

Maybe that makes sense...

There is a Downside to them also.. When I see one in a car I make sure and write the ticket instead of a warning.... I figure that it has given you your fair share of warnings...

As far as being a troll.. I've just rolled up to a few to many accidents and most of them speed is a factor.. It may not be you that can't handle the speed but others around you that you suprise or are not expecting the speeder..

I've had a V1 for about 5 years. It's bad. Has saved me from a number of tickets. I need to update it to detect Pop3 radar, which is what they're running locally now, and is a tough one to avoid. I really don't speed too much anymore, now that I'm older and slightly wiser, and don't really use it around town, (I'm usually towing and therefore commercial) but I do on longer road trips, along with the CB. Best off to just slow down a little, but the V1 is a great radar detector, and the little arrows that tell you if it's ahead or behind are awesome. Has saved me a lot more than $400 in tickets over 5 years.

Yeah, the radar detection is basically even among the 3 originally mentioned although the Bel and Escort units had better filtering of false hits than the Valentine.

I didn't know that they would upgrade the Escort units. I'll have to check in to see if they'll upgrade my 4600. It is still the same basic case they are still using. Great info, I'll check with Cincinatti Microwave on Monday.

Fair enough, sorry for the troll thing. I know I was expecting that response from someone as anytime a subject like this comes up the holy'er than thou attitude can come out. I tried to preface that I really am not trying to blow away the traffic (7 to 9 over), I'm nearly 40 years old now and past that phase of my life to some degree. I try to keep the power of the truck aimed at the trailer or at the drag strip. Point taken. Thanks for the polite response and I apologize for my not so polite one.

One other thing, I'm a little of a techie at heart and like to know what's going on around me. I am starting to like the idea of the arrow thing on the Valentine.

I'm guessing it was the POP radar that got me since my 10 year old Escort didn't even go off. I asked the patrolman what unit he used and he said K5. I don't know if that corresponds to the POP or not.

I guess I always figure slow drivers are just as dangerous as the fast ones.

My Galaxy CB as been the best Radar detector to date for me. I always know a few miles ahead where the law man is sitting. It works out for me cause the only time I speed is on roads where big trucks travel, like the interstate and state highways.

As far as radar detectors and speeding go, what about using them to alert to upcoming constuction? I know in Memphis they are always doing some type of construction in a new place and they put out those signs that set off the radar detector to alert to it. Yea, thats all I want a detector for, the construction zone warnings, yea!

It might be off topic- but what does the US legislation say about radar detectors? Or about radar jammers?
Over here these devices are forbidden and the fines are .......very fine financially...

If you check out valentine's website, somewhere on there it explains the Pop technology. That's how I learned about it, the detector didn't go off at all but I got pulled and given a warning. Looked up my V1 serial # on their site, told me I could have it updated to detect the Pop3 radar, which is almost like instant on radar, don't know how you'd really avoid it unless they shoot someone ahead of you and you get a little reflection.

Did the Valentine site give you a fee for the upgrade? I was just curious how reasonable?

At the risk of getting flamed or called a troll, I'm curious why you choose to run 7-9 over the limit. Is it because 7-9 over is the standard traffic flow or because you think that 7-9 is the maximum that you think you can get away with consistently?

I was thinking about your post as I was driving 270 miles this evening and it occured to me that I usually run 2-3 mph over the limit just because that seems to be a speed that keeps me from backing up traffic in the right lane but more-or-less stays within the spirit of the law if not exactly the letter of the law. I have an old radar detector that my dad gave me but I never used it consistently so I quit carrying it. I do find times when running in traffic that I have to run 5-10 or more over the limit just to avoid distrupting the traffic flow and I'll do that while in those traffic areas but once I'm back on the open road, I drop it back to 2-3 over and let it cruise.

So, enlighten me, why run 7-9 (or whatever amount) over the posted limit? Traffic flow? You failed to plan ahead and are consistently late? Just because you can get away with it?

Asbestos suit on - flame away

I think the fee is around $60 or $70, not bad. Especially considering its 5 years old. I do like the way it fits in the truck, I had it mounted above my rearview mirror and the wire hidden under the plastic molding and the visor. You could unhook it and yank it down in about 3 seconds, stuff the end of the wire under the sun visor, and there was no evidence, which is a good thing. I ran it a fair amount when we lived in Virginia, and only one cop detected it with his detector-detector, but didn't know which vehicle it came from, so he pulled us all. Gave me plenty of time to toss it in the back seat. He really surprised me at close range, usually if you just turn it off after the first beeps they don't pick it up at all. I'm getting better at driving slower and easier now, and don't use it much, but on trips it is great to have.
