Putting off bombs for the truck to buy a pistol
I have way to many hobbies!!! Well, I've wanted something like this for sometime now. I have decided to hold off on any bombs for my truck...I'm rather happy with her the way she is, someday maybe, but not this year.
So I have been checking around for pistols, semi-auto and I have decided on one. I have looked at S&W, Colt, Keltec, Paraordinance(pricey), Taurus and Springfield Armory. The S&W, Para are more money than I want to spend and one dealer said they only have a one year warranty(on the Para) whereas Springfield has a lifetime, must think highly of their product. In all my searching I have decided on a Springfield Armory XD with a 4" barrell in 45 ACP, Olive Drab color. I have heard many things about the 9mm and wanted something that will stop not go through. I have a friend who has gotten me the best deal I have found yet, yes it is legal, he is legal to sell firearms.
So, my truck bombs will be put on the back burner, besides I only drive it around 50 miles a week now....so no need to get there any faster, that just means less time in the truck! I told my wife I was buying a pistol and she said, "What! Why do you need a pistol?" I told her why not? I have wanted one for a long, long time and actually want to buy more rifles/shotguns and pistols....I guess that comes from my Grandpa who collected the same for as long as I remember. So anyhow, I'm buying it regardless, any of you guys have to deal with this issue with your wives? I'm gonna go for my carry permit, after some extensive target blasting. Do I need to explain that as a reason for getting it? Protection? I'm not really worried about someone busting into my house....especially out where I live, but you never know and the only other options right now are my Marine Kabar, a 22 pistol, compound bow with a broadhead, 22Mag sighted in at 100 yds or a 22LR.....oh yeah, can't forget the maze of crap the kids leave all over the house at night, that's good for a broken leg on a crook entering our house!!!
All I have heard is good about the XD. Any suggestions as far as the wife is concerned? I don't think it will be that big of a deal. I think she asked the same question when I bought the Marlin 22Mag. Started to scare her though when I painted it in a camo pattern and took some old OD green canvas material and wrapped the rifle with it....plus the scope on top....don't know why shes nervous?

Stick with the Springfield, don't get the Para. My dad has a Para 10mm and it is crap, good thing it is just around to shoot cans and stuff. It is not reliable worth a ****. I haven't heard a negative comment about Springfield and they have been around forever so that should speak highly for them.

A double action revolver makes a good home defense gun. I keep a loaded .38 and a strong flashlight in the dresser. My wife knows how to use it, basically just point and pull the trigger. Simple, reliable, and fast. No kids around the house yet, I'll find a more secure place for it when we have some.
YOu wont regret the XD in .45.....I helped my brother pick a new handgun for himself a few months ago and settled on the XD for him as well. I own SIG P220, Springfield 1911A and a handful of others of various calibers and styles but my SIG P220 is my fav gun for carry or around house.
I also am very impressed with the new Taurus 24/7 OSS military ...looks like the Springfield XD and is an 12+1 in .45acp...it was the one that may have been the new military firearm if tests were not stopped because of the budget and war in Iraq. Good article on it in either last months or month before of NRA Magazine. Outstanding write up and comes in various configurations to include ambi safety, decocker, new recoil activated slide, sa/da or sao plus more.........

If I could not get a .45 I would go with .40SW as a good compromise with capacity, accuracy and firepower....but in my mind not much better than some GOLD DOTs in .45acp.
Good luck and good shooting....

I have a SA custom loaded 1911 and love it. I would trust my life to it any day.
You cant go wrong with a XD as well. I dont know how they do it(grip design possibly?) but anyone can shoot hit and shoot it accurately. It is by far the sweetest shooting hand gun out there in my opinion. Look for it to take over for the side arm of the millitary and law enfforcement. Just my opinions though.

My next pistol will be that XD in .45 with the 5 inch barrel.

Before you buy the Springfield it might be worth your time to handle and shoot a Glock. The XD is a nice gun, but having shot both I prefer Glock hands down. A friend of mine has the 9mm XD and it's a nice shooting gun, but after shooting my G17 he wished he had bought a Glock instead. At his first time shooting one, he was more accurate with my G17 than he was with his XD9 that he had been shooting for several months.
Just food for thought.
Seriously though, whatever you want to buy, I highly recommend shooting one like it before buying. Many indoor ranges have the more popular guns available to rent.
By the way, putting off bombs to buy a gun is ALWAYS an excusable thing to do. After all, guns are investments. Bombs are not.

The XD is a great pistol, the Glock is great too, but I think the ergonomics and natural point and shoot of the XD is better. Plus, on the XD you get the grip safety like on the 1911s, I think the added safety is well worth it! I haven't shot the .45 XD, but I have the .40 service XD and it's done nothing but impress me since the day I got it! Enjoy!
