Protection permits...

I was wondering if there is anything like a national protection permit. I do some traveling from state to state and would like to be legal for carrying in all lower 48 states. Is there such a thing? Any advice from those in the know? Do yo have to get one from each state that you travel though or maybe just dont worry about it ....till you get caught somewhere?

Unfortunately, there is no national license for carrying a concealed handgun. If there was I can guarantee you that I'd be waiting in a long line to get it.

You can get a state CHL though. In my case, Texas has "reciprocity" with I believe 16 other states so I can carry in those states as well. Unless you are federal law enforcement that's about the best you're gonna get though.

On edit: I believe a law was recently passed that allows even local law enforcement to carry in any state, but that still doesn't help you.

Get your pistol packing hands on "Traver's guide to the Firearm laws of the Fifty States" I carry it with me when I travel. Every state has different requirments for going thru there turf.
I have a Washington and a Utah permit. Utah's has more "reciprocity" than WA.

You are correct HOSS, a law was recently passed that gives Law Enfoprcement and Retired Officers an International Permit that permits them to carry in any State. They only need to qualify at the range yearly.

Getting caught without one is not acceptable. It gets expensive fast. In New York there is a six month manditory jail sentence in Mass there is a one year. Maryland is also very strict.

Basically if you don't have a permit in a state, don't get caught there with a gun. Do look into transport laws to see how you can handle one in your possession while on a trip. Pays to get a metal check safe from Walmart, put the empty gun in it, lock it, put it in the trunk, will get you through most states.

Be careful, jail time ruins a vacation....

Better add to that, someone will jump me about the locked metal box. A vehicle search does not include a locked box. Only a search warrant can open it.

My truck didn't come with a trunk.

Was that an option with the SLT Deluxe?

Haulin is very much correct, you don't even want to think about getting caught in today's times with an "illegal" weapon in you vehicle or on your person. These young cops will call the SWAT Team and have you face down in the dirt before you can say anything. Be very careful where you carry and who you tell about it. Most of the states that have CC Permits like WV have not signed each others agreements with the other states? Don't know why,- politics I guess.

Really? So if I have drugs in my toolbox, they can't vehicle search it? I guess a dog could smell through it, though... What about a dead body or something? That sounds like a pretty big loophole to me...

If they're interested they'll get a warrant. And believe me, if the drug dog alerts on any part of your vehicle they will be interested.

Not only that but they must have probably cause to search your vehicle during a traffic stop. They usually try to intimidate you into consenting to a search but if they have to ask for consent then they don't have probable cause. Otherwise they wouldn't ask. Also, they cannot detain you until a drug dog arrives. They must write your ticket within a reasonable time and turn you loose. Anything else and your lawyer can get the fruits of the search thrown out.
