Pistol ????
Pistol ????
I am looking at purchasing a new semi-auto. I out of my field with semi's, I'm a rifle & scattergun man. I am looking at a HK UPS in .45 and a Springfield (Glock knockoff) HD in .40. The HK is practically new with two mags, confiscated by a university police dept. and traded in to the gun shop can get it for $575.00. The Springfield is new and is $490.00, it has a palm grip saftey which I like over the Glock 22. Give me some opinions.

Re:Pistol ????
Both are good pistols. HK has a reputation for being able to take more abuse than most others, as they were designed for heavy duty use by SWAT and para-military forces. Some of the foreign military special ops use HK's in both 9mm and .45 auto, and they appear to hold up well. Springfield is used by many competition shooters, seeing a lot of rounds in short periods of time, and they function well and hold up well also. I think you are at a "personal preference" decision point, as either should serve you well. I also prefer the grip safety of the 1911 clones as opposed to the DAO (double-action-only) carry guns, but the best safety is the one exercised by the shooter. Get the one that feels best to you, and you will shoot better with it. The key to proficiency with the pistol is the same as rifle or scattergun: practice, practice, practice.
If you are new to pistols, it would also be a very good idea to get a little bit of instruction at the shooting range from a NRA instructor, as they can start you with good techniques early.

I Own a Springfield Armory XD 40 i believe that is what you are looking at it is a very nice gun no complaints at all and would recommend it to anyone! The .40 round is simply awesome as well i like it much better than any 9mm and better than my Springfield armory 1911 .45 (the .40 round not the gun itself) However i am now the owner of the springfield armory .40 1911!!! I AM IN HEAVEN with that gun! HK makes a great product however my spring fields serve me well very well and i say if it aint broke! DOnt fix it and with now 3 springfield hand guns i have NO complaints from any of them!

-Ian

Absolutely LOVE my H&K USP 9mm. There are a lot of Glock lovers out there and for good reason, Glock is a top class piece, but I would never recomend one to someone who does not shoot VERY regularly.

My .02

The best thing about the .45 is that it works. You can hit a "target" anywhere and it will go down. A hit in the toenail will put 'em down.(a bit of trivia; the .45 was developed because the .38 (close to 9mm) would not stop a drug crazed attacking Moro.) To demonstrate the effectiveness of the 9mm vs. the .45, just do the following. Take a brick and drop it on your toe. It will hurt and you will jump around a lot and cuss. That's a 9mm. Now take an anvil and drop it on your toe. You will go down, you will not move. It will also hurt, but not for long as that entire side of your body goes into shock. That's a .45.
The Navy and Army track toads used the .45 long after the 9mm came into style. The reason being, you could empty a magazine of .45 rounds from a Thompson into a sealed compartment, take a smoke break, then enter the compartment. The .45 would bounce around for 30 minutes. In a tank it only bounced around for 10 minutes(smaller space).
The only 9mm that's worth shooting is the round made specifically for sub-guns. However, pistols don't handle the pressures well.
That's my opinion, I ain't changing it, and don't even try to argue with me.
Going fishing and see ya Sunday.

Shortround out
I bought a factory re-conditioned Sig Model 226, 9mm, the other day. I haven't got to shoot it yet, but I can hardly wait. The only noticable wear was where it was carried in a holster. Since it is capable of interchanging the barrels, I'll probably buy a 40 Cal later.

In my dealing with guns i've owned such as para ordance, springfield and other such guns they jam. I know alot of people don't like to hear this but before you spend money on any of them try and shoot them there is nothing worse than a gun that jams no matter what the cost. I love glocks (no jams).
Crobtex, you're going to love that Sig. I got a 245 2 weeks ago, shot it last weekend. The gun's way better than I am. Went though around 180 rounds of various stuff just to see what it likes. It likes everything well enough, not a single malfunction from a brand new semi-auto. Good stuff.
