PAINTING QUESTIONS...steel door

I have a Taylor stainable steel front door. Basically its a metal door with wood grain texture. I want to refinish it.

What do I use to get the old stain off. I have been able to remove some with just a wet rag and some elbow grease.

Also, I bought the Minwax gel stain.....is that the correct stuff to use?

Thanks

You probaby need to paint the door white first and then stain it. I assume you are replacing the look with a wood grain finish. You will need to ruff up the surface with a scotch bite type pad first, in order for paint to adhere. On that surface I would use an oil based paint and stain. Don't mix latex and oil paints though. Oh, I'd use a product like "Penatrol" for a smooth finish. (in the paint not stain)
