Paint question.........

I recently purchased a blue 03 and have a silver cap from my 98 which doesn't look so hot. Needless to say, it needs to be painted blue but body shops want from $500 to $700 to paint it. There's no way I'll pay that. I had a co-worker tell me that he heard that you could give the body shop your paint code and they could get your paint for you in a spray can.. Could this be true?? I have no problem wet sanding the cap and spraying it myself but I don't want to buy a gun and try to mix it myself and experiment with my painting abilities.. Spray cans would be awesome!! If not, I'm just going to try to match some off the counter paint as close as I can to the truck and start painting..
Pffft.Pffft.Pffft. Hmmm... smells good.....

Re:Paint question.........

Yes some will do that for you. Just ask arround.

Also if it is a color that has been arround a long time then after market cans should already be available.

Re:Paint question.........

Just be prepared to buy more than you think you need. Spray several light coats and don't be surprised to find light areas after you think you have it covered good. Spray cans do not cover as well or as fast as a gun because they only have the propellant in the can to push it out and a small orifice to spray through. But it can be done by the can.

Do your thumb a favor and buy one of those spray can squeeze trigger thingys. Will make the job a little easier and probably more consistent on the coverage.

Re:Paint question.........

A local parts store around here will mix spray cans. I think doing a whole cap would be hard to do with cans though. Get a gun and practice with something else first. BTW, I was doing the same thing as you except with a pickup sleeper. Sanded it, left it out for a night. Gone next morning. :'( Cans were pretty expensive. I used them for my O/H camper brackets later. Match was perfect.

Re:Paint question.........

If they'll mix it for you, maybe rent a compressor and sprayer from a local rental place? Might save half a day.

Re:Paint question.........

I'd vote with Redleg, rent a sprayer. More specifically, one of those HVLP sprayers would probably work pretty well. They do a really good job of putting the paint on what you're painting rather than in the air. We rented one to spray a metallic paint on the walls of a bathroom we renovated, and I was impressed by the coverage and lack of overspray.
