Pack Trip

Headed out day after x-mas for 6 day pack trip into the Mazatal Mtns to hunt big kitty kats. 5 of us going with 5 saddle horses and 8 pack animals. Weather forecast looking good with temps in upper 50's day and upper 20's night. I need to get away from work, radios and telephones, can't wait to get started. This is a guys only trip, wives are dropping us off at trail head and will pick us up 6 days later. Hopefully fill 3 tags. Been planning this trip for about 4 months and all animals are in shape and ready to go. 3 animals are carrying adult beverages. If we dont get the lions we still will have fun.

4 good hound dogs and 30-06 and 30-30. Need to get revenge on one cat as it got a hold of one mule on a picket line and took one eye before we got to it. Mule is fine but only has one eye now. Happened in middle on night about 4 months ago.

Thinking about getting the snowshoes out this winter and going tracking for a bobcat. Like to get an electronic caller also. Lots of coyotes and fox here.<br>Don

Re:Pack Trip

We got skunked, absolutely no wildlife, no mule deer, no lions not even a rabbit to practice on. No javalina, Almost eary feeling. No droppings, no tracks in the snow, Nuthin. No quail or doves Did see one dead bear cub that had been down for probably a month. Still had a good time just getting away from civilization for a while. We covered about 100 miles in those 5 days. Plan to try again in March. We have had only 3.5 inches of rain here in last 15 months and I think the drought has really taken a toll on wildlife. All ranchers have had to pull all cattle out of all National Forest areas. There is no foliage left for anything to eat and most all water tanks are bone dry. Saw one stray bull that looked pretty bad. Thought about doing him a favor but elected to tell rancher when we got back. Maybe better luck next time or just take wives with us and have a different kind of fun.
