Oil Field Pipe
Oil Field Pipe
I got a job this past weekend hauling some 2 and 3/8 oil pipe. I had about 125 joints per load. I dont know how heavy I really was but I was HEAVY. Does anyone have an idea what a joint weighs. Kyle.
Re:Oil Field Pipe
Depends on what wall thickness and length of the pipe.

Sch40 pipe in 20ft. lengths would have weighed about 12,500# for 125 lengths. If it was Sch80, it would be a little over 16,000#

2 3/8" schedule 40 pipe weighs 5.793 lbs per foot.

30' joint x 5.793 lbs per foot = 173.79 lbs per joint

125 joints x 173.79 = 21,723.75 lbs (a heavy load)

A joint is 1 piece of pipe (typically about 30 feet long), and they are connected together with collars that are on the end of each pipe.

http://www.metalshorts.com/clear_techn_d/spws.pdf

Schedule 40, 2 3/8" O.D. pipe weighs 3.653 lbs per foot. That would be 109.59 lbs per 30 ft joint. 125 joints would be 13,698.75 lbs. That sounds more like it.

Re:Oil Field Pipe
Not all that long ago (6 years) I ran a pulling unit in the oilfield. ( Thats the rig that pulls all that pipe out of the hole) Anyway, a string of 2 3/8 pipe weighs about 18-19,000 lbs coming off bottom. (that means picking the entire string up out of the slips that hold it) Around western Kansas the wells are only around 3800 to 4000 feet deep which means about 120-130 joints of pipe.
2 1/2 weighs around 25-30,000
Sounds like you had a pretty good load on!

Keith
