New York City
New York City
Going to New Jersey for banquet on 11/5 and planning to stay in New York for couple extra days and play tourist. I have not been to city since 1979(stood on top of WTC) and wife never been there. Looking for suggestions on hotel and tourist traps to see. Have had suggestions of the Waldorf, Marriot, and Plaza, any body have good or bad experiences at any of these or anywhere else for that matter. Airfare is being paid so I have little flexibility w/ budget. Its been a while since this cowboy saw a big city, may not know how to act.
Thanks for the recomendations

I do not know about hotels, never stayed in one in the city, but for what it is worth, the President stays at the Waldorf when he visits. as for places to see, let me know what interests you most and I'll try some sugestions.

Skinner,
The Plaza Hotel is nice, but you'll spend about $300 a night at the least. It is right across the street from Central Park. You can't go to NYC and not visit Central Park. Take wifey for a nice walk around the ponds and lake if the weather is nice.
Above all be safe. NYC is not like Arizona, the law abiding citizens are not allowed to have firearms to protect themselves.

chaikwa.
We stayed at the Waldorf for one night last year when we went there. I'll admit, it was a nice suite. We spent the rest of the week at the Roosevelt Hotel, which was also pretty impressive.
One thing I did while SWMBO was in her training was go to the USS Intrepid, which has a cool collection of military planes. I see from their website that they now have a Concorde, which they didn't have when I visited it.

Some people really like it there, but after about two or three days in New York, I'm well past ready to go home.
I would never want to live there, but I love to visit NYC...
Just walking around the city is cool, and a lot of fun. The subways are not scary, or as confusing as people make them sound.
Have fun. SOHO is cool, wander around and see what you find. It's neat to see all the stuff on the side streets.

We stayed at the Plaza by the United Nations building it was nice. Make reservations now for Sparks Steakhouse (where Paul Castilono was shot down) it was great better make reservations now. Take the ferry around the island that's pretty neat. Soho is very cool (very different people I'm pretty sure they are not from Tenn.)
OK, first things first: the Plaza is CLOSED for renovation/transformation.
Ground Zero it is a must, not for the site but for the emotion, appreciation, and respect for all who lost their lives and participated in the rescue.
A trip around Manhattan with the Circle Line is a very nice experience on a nice day, make sure you are dressed for it, in November it can get pretty cool, especially on the water.
Rockefeller Center is very nice, and so is a trip to the statue. Wall street and China town.
The red tour busses are a nice way to see the concrete canyons.
Central Park is a nice refuge on a nice day.
Museums, museums, museums. Take your pick: art, natural history, history, and so on. The Intrpid falls in this cat, it is worthwile to see. Close to where the Cirle Line starts/ends.
Shoping: bring lots of money or a deckfull of credit cards. If it is made by man or found in nature you can buy it here. From cheap trinkets in all the tourist traps, to designer clothing on Madison Ave, to HIGH end jewelry on 5th Ave. to just tons of jewelry on 47 Street bet. 5th and 6th Aves.
Information on just about anythiing in the city can be found on line, but if you need, I'll try to find specifics for you on any particulat thing, just let men know.
Congratulations on the Award, I'm sure you worked hard for it and earned it.
Have a great time, stay safe.

On 11-5 you could see the Rangers Vs. Devils and on the 6th Jets Vs. Chargers. Dont forget to go to Grand Central Terminal that's where I work. 3 days is not nearlly enough time to see NYC. You may see most of Manhattan but none of the other boroughs.
