.45-70 kick
You need to try the .50-140-3 1/4 in my 1874 Sharps
Off hand it only raises one foot off the ground. Off the bench is brutal. 490 grain is my varmit load at ~2000 fps and the 750's are good brush busters at ~1800 fps. However, it's fun to shoot and will put one down as far as you can see/hit it. Sounds kinda like a 105 going down range, or maybe a boxcar.

Don't go around giving Barretts a bad rap, they have the firepower but only the kick of a 12 ga. I know, I have a M82A1 and a 95M and my son an AR-50. Lots of fund to shoot at 1000 Yards and keep it under 10 inches. Can't do it with the M82A1 but the 95M and the AR-50 will do it all day with good match loads.

the 50 is a LOT of fun but protect your ears. even then the pressure wave is pretty strong.

Last summer we were using my friends .45-70 to split rocks at our dump. It was pretty impressive. And I scrolled through all the other posts real fast, but I read something about a scope? My lord.....you better keep your eyes away from it.....or you'll not be seeing out of it for a day or two....at least until the swelling goes down....that is...if a scope will hold up on that sholder cannon...... Enjoy it. Your next purchase should be Ruger's new .500 magnum....pistol. Ya you heard right...PISTOL. Well, I just got on Ruger's site and tried to find a link to it but couldn't. But I did find this one.

That's a custom made pistol by John Linebaugh. They're built off a 357 Maximum frame.

They have a Barrett single shot bolt action .50 cal at the local gun shop, it's about 5 feet long and has a muzzle brake about the size of a shoe box. I can just barely hold it to my shoulder while standing, it is one heavy SOB. Must be over 40 lbs. You can shoot it 3 times for $25, I haven't shot it yet, but I will. Wish I could take a TV or something up there to shoot. Or an old car. They all said that there's about a 1/2 second of your life that just disappears when you pull the trigger, and that it will clear the sinuses of all bystanders. The price tag on it is $3000 without the scope, I don't need one that bad, but maybe someday when I'm old and rich I'll get one. I think a recoil pad will tame the .45-70 quite a bit, that should be plenty for shooting deer up close. I don't think a scope will get me, I'll make sure I give it plenty of eye relief. My TC Omega has struck me several times, not hard, but enough to make you think about it. Each time was shooting at deer close under the stand, the sharp downward angle seems to make it worse. Shooting more level, it hasn't ever done that.

One of my girlfriend's cousins brought one of the Ruger .500 pistols along one say while deer hunting, and let me tell you something, it was a beast. I didnt shoot it, I let another kid shoot it who was 17 and skinny. Kinda funny, it kicked pretty good, but not TOO bad. He had made up some custom loads for it, and I didnt want to use up all his ammo. It would have been devastating if a deer would have got hit by it

I just picked up an 1886 Extra Light - weighs around 6.5 lbf, the rifle likes 350-gr. LaserCast and the 405-gr. JFP's, shoots real well- but after shooting it 29 times, my .454 24 times (12 ea. 240 and 300-gr. loads), and my .338 4 times, my whole right side was toast!

Guess I'm getting WEAK in my old age...

Anybody fire the .416 Barrett yet?

I have an original 1873 springfield carbine 45-70. The gun doesnt weigh much at all, itll give you one heck of a beating, both the shoulder and the wallet paying for the ammo.

Yeah, handloading really pays off for the 45-70. Factroy ammo is generally loaded to be safe for the old guns. Reloading charts generally list loads for the old guns, significantly higher loads for more modern guns (IE new mod Marlin), and much higher loads for new guns with really stout actions (IE Ruger Number 1).

Also, accuracy wise, my Contender was all over the target with factory loads. It took a while, but I finally developed a load that will shoot touching groups at 100 yards.

As far as big revolvers go, I've fired a few but really prefer the TC. The bore line is lower relative to the grip so it seems to slam more straight back at you, and flip up less, which I find easier to control. Still, I wouldn't mind having one of the 500 S&W's.

You need the matching sidearm.
