need 4T80e tranny help

I have a friend with an 01 olds aurora. It has the 4.0 v8 and the 4t80e tranny. He is getting codes for the tcc solenoid. I know that there was a problem with the cast aluminum vb, and the regulator valve could wear out the bore, which would cause oil to leak past the valve and cause lockup problems. I don't know if this is his problem, but it sure sounds like it. What I need to know is if the tcc solenoid is on the bottom of the tranny or if it is on the side. I can get a new solenoid for about $30 and replace it for him if it is on the bottom. If it is on the side, I will tell him to take it in to get replaced, because those trannys are a pain to take out. If there are any other things that it could be, please let me know. Thanks

You have to take the pan off of the end to get to the valve body. Lock up is in the valve body. It is a real pain in the butt to get the pan off, you do not have to pull the tranny, but you come close. Does he get a code P1870??

So the pan is on the side of the tranny, not on the bottom. I believe that was one of the 2 codes.

That is correct. The pan on the bottom only has the filter in it.

The P1870 code is a slip code. The valves and bores in the valve body wear out, the bores need to be reamed with a special reamer and the valves need to be replaced with updated valves. The actual repair of the valve body is not to bad, but the labor to get the valve body out is a bear. When I repair one of these I usually change all of the selonoids, just so I don't have to go back again.
