Near miss

I was pulling out of a gas station today, and was turning onto the near lanes of a four lane highway, well the way I was parked at the gas station made me have to make a wide turn out into the left lane and then get right back into the right lane again because I used all the steering wheel I could and needed to make a turn from the right lane (im confused) anyway...I thought everything was clear so I pulled out, and as I was getting back into the right lane, all i hear is "SCREEEEEEEEEEECH!" and i look back, and there is a little red dodge neon that escaped my view somehow...he was probably about 2 ft from my right rear fender and had been in my blind spot the whole time...I felt sooo bad for doing this to him...I wanted to stop and apologize because im sure he wasn't real happy! To make things worse, he passed me later on down the road and had his wife and their baby kid with them in the back seat! I wouldve never fogiven myself for that if they hit me...

I had something similar happen yesterday. I was going to turn left across traffic pulling out of a grocery store. Traffic is bad around noon on this 2 lane road. This lady in a jeep turns on her blinker to make a right turn into the parking lot, so I figured I hammer it and get across. Tires start screeching and I stop before pulling all the way out. She was apparently headed to the second driveway. Scared the out of me.

I have folks all the time who seem to want to drive on my right side in the 'Blind Spot'.
Stock 'Sport' mirrors are pretty much useless.
I have learned to use my blind spot mirrors first, then if an object is detected, use the flat mirror to further ID the 'target'.
Also a quick turn of the head is sometimes needed to check any possible blind spot.

The little convex mirrors are essentially all I ever use.

I very rarely have any reason to use the flat mirrors. I've never understood what they're good for.

Twice I've accidentally crossed into the right lane with a small car in my blind spot. Both times the drivers were steaming....until I rolled the window down and....apologized. It's amazing how the attitude disappeared. I just told the guy that I was really sorry.. Wasn't his fault; all mine. Once he knew I was sincere, he was cool with it.

In situations where you can't actually speak to the other driver, I read somewhere that the "V" gesture is the symbol for basically "I'm sorry", but I don't know how many people are aware of that.

When somebody gives me that "peace" sign I try to run 'em off the road.

Darn hippies. Hmph. "Peace".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has felt like I should apologize when I do something stupid. I just haven't had the cajones to do it yet. Everybody fouls up. Glad all is OK.

WOW! Most people don't appologize for their stupidity is because most people are too stupid to realize they did something stupid. I have this problem driving every day. People do things and don't know they almost got killed or almost killed someone else. It's nice to see that people actually feel bad for mistakes instead of blaming everyone else.

Same here! When i bought my truck the passengar side blind spot mirror was broken and the first thing I did was go get a new one because those little things catch a lot that the big mirrors wont!

I've accidentally pulled out in front of a car or two myself, never intentionally though. I usually see the person in the other car hold up a single finger towards me.....guess that means they're giving me one more chance or something........

I hit a jaywalking pedestrian yesterday. Its crazy around here with the bad drivers (really aggressive and no problems with banging a u-turn on a 4lane road) and all the other activity going on (thats oblivious of you).
Thank god I didnt do any real damage..
Im real twitchy on my motorcycle in town nowadays since I got hit on that 2x in the past few years. So I use the truck to bring them up north to ride where people actually think behind the wheel. Guess I gotta install cow-catchers on the front so I can get out of the city safely.
Dunno how you can miss a big loud smoky diesel or a big red bike that idles like a helicopter, but it happens =(.
I found the worst thing about the city with this truck is the pillars obstructing your view. Im used to people hiding in my passenger side blind spot now, but the pillars are a killer!

Its darwinian evolution, but the dropouts keep trying to take me out along the way!

I have the tow mirrors, and that right side flat mirror is trouble. I have mine focused on the blind spot which makes it unusable for anything else. The convex section is getting too small for my old eyes.
