did anyone else read teh article about the superduty that gets 26mpg in DieselPower. He had a custom tonneau(sp) cover that started at the top of the cab and sloped back to the tailgate. Really ugly but effective I guess. He also had 3.08 gears, 2-4" drop, tall skinny tires, custom tuned chip that was programmed for alot of timming and economy below 2k rpm then above 2k rpm it would give a 50hp boost.

Aerodynamic resistance doesn't surpass rolling resistance until 55mph, so the test was useless.

At those speeds the weight of the tailgate probably had more effect on mileage than the air resistance (an exaggeration...but still....).

It's illegal to drive a dually on public roads without the identification lights. If you want to run without a tailgate, pick up a tri-bar and mount it below the tailgate to keep you legal.

THey call it "elementary" because the hard differential equations aren't solvable. even by the people who do that all the time.

Not trying to argue Dave, but are you sure that is a law in every state, or just in yours? I have seen a few other duallys out here that are tail-gate-less, and never getting in trouble. I only did it for a short amount of time anyways so stop bustin my chops

It's a part of the USDOT regs. FMCSR 393 Subpart B Table 1.

Any vehicle 80 inches wide or more must have them (identification lights) front and rear (1 at each corner, 3 in the middle). The reason the cab lights are available on SRW trucks is so they can be run legally with a flatbed trailer 80 inches wide or wider.

The tri-bar is not technically legal by itself unless it's at the same level as the tail lights, you should mount individual lights as close to the corners as practical.

So I guess my 2 tail lights, and each rear fender light only adds to 4 so I would need just 1 more light to stick in the middle . Oh well doesnt really matter, I like how my tailgate has 5 lights on it, then I have my tail lights, then i have my fender lights... 9 whole lights!

wow, I can count! keep me far away form those elementary differential equations though, thats a lot harder than counting...

Funny , funny stuff fellas!

I am tormented by my friends about my 1985 gold mercedes bought on ebay from California.

Has anyone seen the MYTHBUSTERS episode about the stero sound blowing apart a car??

my car mysteriously has no gaskets or screws attached and a diesel engine installed.............

The producers won't give me the VIN........

Deflection angle of windshield.
Deflection and consumption of air at the grill.
Hight of the truck from the ground.
and even then, the researchers found that vehicle speed and even wind speed caused variations.
Thus, Mythbusters found what works best for THAT truck in THOSE conditions. However, what may work well for my standard cab long bed would be totally different than a quad cab short bed.
And to complicate the equation further, what works best for me today, may change tomorrow based on all the outside factors.

Rich.
And then when you throw in the conveyor belt factor things start to REALLY go haywire!!
