My truck got "Hit & Run" last night. Pretty mad.

Last night a guy I work with turned 21, so he invited a few of us out to go celebrate down one of the local watering holes. When we were leaving, we were standing outside deciding what to do...I wanted to go to the Flop'N'Wiggle, as did a couple other guys.

My truck was parked facing out, in a corner spot, at the far right side. This truck full of guys in a white F-250/350 crew cab long bed diesel pulls up, and says something to my buddy. He walks up to the truck, I guess they asked him "are you military, or here with the rodeo". My other buddy tells him to just come away from the truck, so he does.

The guy in the truck then hits the go pedal and takes a right, practically aimed at my friends that were standing on that side of the truck, and hits his right quarter panel on the front right bumper of my truck, and drags the whole side of his truck down against mine.

While I'm standing there trying to figure out EDIT just happened, because I had no clue, this girl walks up to me with a cell phone, and says here, I've got the cops on the phone. I talk to the cops, told them what happened, gave them the truck make/model/description/plate, and they sent a couple officers down.

By the time they got there and were talking to me, other patrols had located the truck that hit me, but, the guys weren't in it, but between the 8-10 witnesses, we were able to give a decent description of the driver.

Anyways, she asked me if I wanted to file a report, and I asked her how that worked. She said it would go on both our driving records. What? Why do I get something on MY driving record when some idiot was drunk and hits MY truck, when I'm not even in it

Anyways, I told her yes to file the report, so she told me that I could pick up a copy of the report tomorrow morning (today) at 8.

My truck is fine, the other truck left some white paint on the chrome, and it broke the clips that hold that black plastic molding on the top of the chrome part of the bumper, so it's loose on that side. I really don't care about that, but I'm Edit that some idiot just smashed into my truck, then hauled butt when he saw what he did.

I picked up the accident report this morning. I have the drivers name & address. Turns out the truck is a COMPANY vehicle. So, I would think the company wouldn't be too pleased to find out an employee took it out for a night on the town, got drunk, drove it into someone elses truck, and then left the scene of an accident.

I'm not really sure how to approach this. I want to screw the guy for everything he's worth, maybe get him fired, teach him a lesson. You don't get wasted and drive 7000 lbs of steel around town. If you hit a 7000 pound truck, push it 6 inches, and not care enough or realize what you did, you might as well be walking around town shooting a shotgun around randomly, at least that's how I feel. Unfortunately, they didn't get a BAC on him or anything, I think they just left the ticket with the truck, don't know for sure.

Advice?

I'd pursue it for all you can....but I fail to see why it would go on your driving record in ANY way.

You may want to get a lawyer to make sure it doesn't.

I would go after him as well. If the company did not report the vehicle stolen I think they can be held liable as well (not that it would be right, but could be some leverage). The fact they seemed to want mess with the truck in the first place shows a lack of common curtiousy or just complete lack of brains.

Start with the company president. Fax him a copy of the police report and a couple of estimates for the damage. If he even hesitates call a lawyer.

First off I apologize, I forgot "General Diesel Discussion" wasn't the "Lounge"...moderators please move to the correct forum!

I kind of like the fax idea. On the flipside, I want to see/hear/feel personal reaction too. Might be a good idea to get a couple estimates, even though, the damage is minimal. It'd just be trying to somehow replace the clips that are under the top plastic molding on the front bumper, and, taking some polishing compound to the chrome.

I'm not sure about the state you are in, but in cali there is a form through DMV that you fill out if you were in an accident but it doesn't go on your record. In June '05 we were rearended by a lady driving a company truck and we were informed by CHP and our insurance co to get the form in as soon as possible. My driving record has been pulled since then and it was never put on my record.

Maybe someone was mistaken, your truck was hit and run, with you not even behind the wheel and it's going to go on your driving record?

How's that, when you weren't even Driving?

Either way it sounds like a non-moving violation, I mean a crime was commited, not just a motor vehicle accident.

I vote for contacting the company (as in company truck), the ball is in your court so to speak.

They turned out okay though, just forgot to take their meds.

I am guessing when she said it will go on "your" record I assume your VIN's record. So when you sell your truck a CARFAX will show the vehicle was in a traffic crash not a record on your personal driver's license record. At least in Illinois thats the way it would be.

Good luck, your pretty well covered no matter what. It's hard to be at fault when your not even in the truck.

I agree with the guys- call the company up and let them know what happened. More than likely it'll be the company's insurance that you'll deal with and not necessarily the guy that actually hit you. If he is any stand up type of guy (which I know, he obviously isn't because he ran off like a pansy boy when he hit your truck) he should have already told his boss. I would go for all that I could though and the lawyer is a good idea. At least make sure your taken care of through out the whole process. Good luck!

Take this guy for all you can, New bumper, new paint, rear end alignment, new brakes, new exhaust system. You get the idea. This needs to hurt the company if it's going to get through and hurt him.

Isn't leaving the scene of an accident a crime in Texas? Didn't this guy get tracked down and hauled off in cuffs?

You could also take him for whiplash 'cause you had to whip around and make sure he had done what you thought he'd just done....

Haha I wish I could get all that for it. But in reality, here's where I am stuck.

One person said to sue them. Sue them for what though?

All I really have is a little paint on my chrome that will rub off, and some plastic clips that need replaced on the bumper. Maybe an alignment too.

Before I go to the company, I need a plan, an objective. "What do I want out of this specifically?"
