moving out on my own
moving out on my own
next week i am going out on my own to start my diesel training at lincoln tech kinda nervous about the big city indinapolis i am a die hard country boy i will stick out like a sore thumb but there will a lot of other rednecks there in the diesel class i am shur.
Hope ya have fun. Rednecks do stick out in them big city folk places. I am going to look at the campus in a few months where I am going for Diesel Hydraulic Tech,CDL & Welding & Fabrication. I should be starting in the Fall of 07 then.
Hey Edy, I was looking at some tech schools as well, I'm not sure if I am going to go back to school yet or not, but what made you choose lincoln tech if you dont mind my asking? I have the info from several schools and I asked them all "Why them?" but I haven't gotten an answer that sways me yet. Hope I'm not hijacking your thread
My redneckness bothered me for about a year in college, but after I got into some of the classes that I was majoring in and started hanging around those people instead of trying to find other redneck friends. I got to feeling alot more comfortable.
You will find your group. dont worry if they are like you or not.

A few things to remember when you get to the big city:
* Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.
* If it sounds too good to be true....it's probably not.
* Don't trust anyone you don't know well.
* Don't get lost. Know exactly where you're going before you leave.
* "Know" the strangers that want to talk to you. Ask yourself, "Who is this guy...what does he want?"
* You sound like you're smart enough to right from wrong. If it sounds right, it's probably OK. If it doesn't sound right, or you have ANY doubt, it's probably wrong.
Just use your head and keep yourself away from bad situations and you'll be just fine.

We all have to move out sometime. It's part of growing up. College is a blast. Remember, the majority of the people starting college are going to feel exactly like you. You've got something in common with them all from the get go.
Take it easy on the booze until you can trust the new people you're going to be hanging out with. Get to know the city and where you shouldn't be alone late at night. Don't carry all your money and credit cards with you.
Put lots of effort into doing well in school. This is your future you're working for. Employers will look at your marks because you won't have any experience when you graduate.
Most of all, have fun. Enjoy being you own boss.

All in all, a bunch of good advice so far !!
Only things I can add would be ...
1) Don't sit around the campus all day and night. Get out and see the sights ... take the tours, go to the local attractions. Don't waste your time, money and brain cells on partying till you drop. At 19, you are very prone to falling into a bad crowd if you aren't careful. Partying at the local clubs can get a guy robbed, drugged or worse ... watch your back and hang out with people that you know well (NEVER FLY SOLO !!) You are a country boy ... get out to the country as often as you can and drag a few of them city-slickers with ya ... show them how the good life is s'posed to be lived.
2) KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FAMILY !!! Your folks want to see you get out and make something of your life ... let em know how you are doing at least once a week. They will give you some great advice that will help make your new found freedom worth having !!
3) Make yourself a budget and try your darndest to stick to it. Nothing worse than eating ramen noodles for breakfast because you don't have anything else in the house and having to rely on your Nike's to get you to where you need to be because you can't fill the tank.
4) Keep your DTR family posted on your progress. You never know ... someone on here might be the link to getting you a good job when you finish school !!!
Have fun and good luck,

agreed, do not put the seasoning in the noodles, and add sugar, and you have oatmeal.
and pizza does not have to be refridgerated, and it is good untill it starts growing something.
I majored in forestry. Thought I was a redneck when I was in highschool. Little did I know. The guys in my class made me look like a yuppy. When I came back home after graduating 5 years later
I had lots of bad habits, a strong accent, a hatred of Bradford Pears, and an affinity for chain saws, drinking beer, swearing, spitting, and killing every deer within 5 miles.
You'll meet lots of friends, some of them you'll keep in touch with forever. Have a good time, don't get drunk and try to whup the entire bar with a pool stick, it doesn't work.
