Moving to canada...maybe
Moving to canada...maybe
Alright guys so Im in the middle of some things that might be turning my eyes to canada. Its personal none of it is legal troubles or anything like that, mostly for school and my best friend lives there (calgary). Does anyone one what it takes to be able to work? I plan on doing an EMR course there then continuing on to my EMT at Prairie Univeristy. Id like to be able to go there at the beginning of the new year or a year from now. First off Ill be driving there from Fresno, California, so Ill have my truck, my dog, possibly a dirtbike, and a whole bunch of other belongings. What do I have to get to be able to work while studying there? What do I need to be able to live and study there? I heard that canada really has no problem with our trucks except for lifts and tires, do I need to get some kind of paperwork for my dog (pitbull), and the dirtbike is iffy but is there more paperwork I need for that too other then the ps and stuff? Im not going to even ask about guns cause I know its kind of a ironclad rule that non citizens cant own guns legally.
Wow, sorry for all the questions but I just wanna make this as easy as possible. Thanks guys.

Your dog should not be an issue, depending on where you live. You will need to contact canada border services agency for bringing your vehicles across:

You can ask them about guns but i doubt they will let you.
You will want to look into alberta provincial laws about drivers license and the truck, you shouldnt have a problem with the lift and tires, thousands of them running around like yours.

Glad to have you come up and see our part of the country. Dog probably need it's rabies shots and vet certificate. Calgary might have a bylaw on pitbulls, don't know. Lift and tires are not problem. Guns, depends on what kind. Vehicle is not a problem, just like visiting, as long as you have insurance. Work shouldn't be a problem as long as your a student you should be able to get a visa. Check with the nearest Canadian consulat.
Welcome to Canada EH. And bring your cowboy hat and boots this is cow country.

Neck,
Pop by the DTR Alberta Chapter (ABDTR#5), you will get good answers. I live just outside Calgary and there are a lot of Calgary folks in the Chapter - it is a really active group.
One of the Alberta guys is an EMT so he can probably fill you in on EMT training etc for Alberta.
Alberta has one of the strongest economies in North America right now due to the oil patch. The best part about Calgary is that you get to decide if you want to be a city mouse or a country mouse.
I am a country mouse so I live on the prairies SE of Calgary. I have a 1 hour commute to and from work in the heart of downtown BUT when I get home at night my nearest neighbor is almost a mile away. If you like city living more, there are lots of houses in the city and even better there are bedroom communities like Langdon, Airdrie or Cochrane. With the strong economy, I am not going to say that housing is cheap in Calgary, but you do have options.
