Military!!!
Hey guys, i dont know where i am going with this Tread, but i have a brother in Iraq. He is doing fine, but has been worried as well. I have just graduated high school, my life is pretty much in front of me. I have my parents breathing down my neck ( for my on good! ) about college. I wasnt the smartest kid in school neither. LOL But i just dont know what to do....
What are yall's thoughts about the military for the one's that has joined and those who have heard what is going on over there. I just figured i could join and get my degree through the military and then just go into the work force. But i dunno.. i just need some more info i guess....
Thanks Trapper.

The military is a good start. I know if I decided to go straight to college I would have never made through. The military gave me some direction in my life and screwed my head on tight. The military isn't for everybody though. Lots of people came in and thought it would be and easy thing to do and just skate by. You can't do that. You need to come in with the frame of mind that you'll have a job to do and you have to do it to the best of your ability or better. The military is stressfull, but it has it's rewards. If I had to do all over again I'd still come in the military. I may have chosen different paths, but they would still lead me through here. If you have the drive to do great things and want to excel in everything that you do by all means join this great nations military. If you have an attitude and refuse to be told what to do, don't join. There are many benefits and adventures to be had. Do some research to see if this is for you. Talk to some military members. When you've made your decision then see a recruiter but not before then. Lots of them will blow smoke up your behind and tell you things that aren't true. Remember to think it through and make the right decision. I wish you the best of luck. Oh yeah, the Air Force is the best branch!
I had some of the best times of my life while in the Army. I saw places that I probably would have never seen had I not been in. I made friends that will last my lifetime.
The war in Iraq is something to account for in your decision making process.

I would join a second time no question. I would actually still be in if I wasnt medically discharged. If you are just going in for the education there are scholarships other then the military. You need to be able to commit a bit more then just wanting to do it for the education. At least if you want to come out the other end.
I graduated highschool with a 1.4 gpa. Yes, I was a straight D student.
It wasn't that high school was hard, I was bored. I took the ACT and scored high enough to get in. I graduated 7 years later with a BS. Only changing majors 5 times before ending up with an engineering degree. It was kinda like, the harder the classes got, the better I done.
Military isn't a bad option. The Iraqi war isn't going to last forever (I really doubt there is another full year before we surrender). There will be other conflicts, but you can see the world in the process.

I'll tell you, this is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I worked hard, and kept my nose clean, and I am doing great. I won't try to sell you on the Marine Corps, (well, maybe a little) I'll give you the scoop on everything that I know. I reccommend the millitary... it has a lot to offer. Great bennys...

well, my friend joined with the thought of just getting money for college and driving cool trucks, and a year later he was in the hospital with shrapnel all in his leg....so it's a big commitment, even if ur thinking ur just gonna be driving trucks.

Icould go on and on with this but I won't.... I'm in the AF and I fly around and we always pick up the Marines and Army. WE always end up dropping them off on the front lines or kicking them out (of the plane) some where over where they need to be(my respect for those guys!!). And normally (if not in the desert) we end up in a hotel some where nice. I got so many stories.............................. Sorry, let me get to the point.. If you do decide to join, be ready to get your degree while your in... Even if you do a four year... and they will pay for it!!!
My son is just now 15 and is going to be a physician. I want him to go to service first.
I would go again in a heartbeat. Somebody with some hookups take my name down. Try me.
So you see where I stand! Also the greatest decision I ever made. I miss it but it led me to a wonderful life.

If you truly don't know what to do.....look into the military. Not meant in a bad way...my point is that you DON'T want to hang out and do NOTHING until you figure out where you're going. I have too many 18/19/20 year olds in my neighborhood living at home and going nowhere after High School. That dog won't hunt! If you're not moving FORWARD....you're dragging someone backwards with you.
The military can be a GREAT "gap" filler.....and it can easily turn into a 20 year gap!

I am ex-Navy and my wife is statined at the Naval Academy. Our son graduates HS in 2 weeks and he starts college at Embry Riddle a week later (getting an early start). He'll go AFROTC, which KILLS his mom.....but it can be a great life.
We moved overseas in 95...the UK (Cornwall) for 3 years and then Sicily, Italy for 3 years. Unless you have tons of $$$$...you can't buy some of the memories. He walked around Stonehenge on two separate trips, all before he was 10. Stuck his foot in Loch Ness and climbed to the top of Mt. Etna.
Go for it....and as said...give it you're ALL. The old saying goes...."you get OUT of it exactly what you put INTO it". You can take advantage of a plethora of advanced education programs, work towards a commission, or just do your time and save for college.
Or....you could stay at home, live with your parents, work a job and possibly never move on to what you were destined for.
Whatever you choose.....GOOD LUCK!
The military has provided me with a living and education for the last 15 years. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. BUT, like said above, if you are interested in the military for an education and not because you feel like it's your civic duty and out of love of country, then PLEASE don't bother. I've seen enough kids in my time that have no patriotism whatsoever. They are worthless troops. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country...
