Mig Welders

Hey anyone have any advice on Mig Welder purchase??

I'm looking at getting one for small jobs and repairs. I'd like to be able to weld as heavy as I can and stay 110 volt so I can use it anywhere. People have told me to go ahead and get one with a gas kit and stay away from Flux core???

How heavy will these units weld? Any advice?

Thanks.

Re:Mig Welders

I believe Hobart makes a good machine. I have not used one of there smaller mig machines, but I have heard a lot of good things about them. For a 115v welder, check out http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/handler135.html

Personally, I would go with the Hobart 175, which operates off of 230v power.
http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/handler175.html

I think both are good machines for flux and solid wire.
Hobart also has a discussion board where you can see many peoples opinions of the above machines and others as well.
http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/

Whatever you do, I would recommend getting as much machine as you can afford. Just remember, with a gas setup, you will be pretty much confined to a shop because the wind will play havok with your weld, (i.e. blowing the shielding gas away).

It's better to have to much power than not enough. That's why I am getting a Cummins next time, instead of a gasser!

Re:Mig Welders

I have the miller 135. Great little welder. If you bevel and get a good root pass you can weld pretty thick metal. Gas is the only way to go if indoors(shop). I have a 220v stick and the 110 mig. Have not touched the the stick ever since I got the mig.

Scooter

Re:Mig Welders

I used to work at a welding supply store. Like TXBOBCAT said, go with the Hobart. I would look into running 230v. It probably shouldn't cost too much. We sold a lot of the Handlers, mostly 110v's. I don't recall any complaints. Work very well on sheet metal up to about 3/16". Duty is a little low on heavier stuff, but if you are just making repairs or fabbing small stuff you'll be fine. Otherwise go for the Handler 175. They will run a 10lb spool and set up for gas. Some others aren't. Also, you will be able to get parts from a dealer. Some of the cheaper rigs leave you with no service. Probably the most important is look to see who makes the gun. I don't know if the Handlers still come with Tweco guns. The Twecos' work the best. Miller welders are good too. I don't know about Snap-on. I just know we sold probably 3 or 4 Handlers a month and never had a complaint.

Re:Mig Welders

Maybe you could ask hoss who owns Hobart...

Anyway, pretty sure Miller bought them a couple of years ago to break into the lower priced market. I have a hobart 110 and it works pretty well. Wish I had the 175 amp machine though. A friend has one and it penetrates a lot better. Works pretty good off of a generator too when you don't have easy access to 220

Re:Mig Welders

A friend of mine has a couple of those hobart migs, 110volt, great little welder not sure on the model number. Weighs about 55 to 60 pounds. I took it on a job one time and welded part of the day with it, flux core wire, only jambed a couple times. I would buy one if i had an xtra 500 or so.

Re:Mig Welders

What are the pros and cons of flux versus solid wire? Costs, type of weld you can do with each one etc etc.
