2-Go to http://free.grisoft.com/ and download the free version of AVG (not the trial but the free.) It's got to be the very best anti virus I've ever used and it's free as long as your not using it on corporate machines. You can use it there too but they don't want you to.
I did for a while until i found it at Fry's with a rebate that made it end up as free anyway.
3- Stop using I.E. accept when you absolutely have to. It's garbage as well.
4- Get Firefox. It has tabbed browsing as well and is what prompted I.E. to start using it.
5- Go to http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php and download the free version of AdAware. You could have some spy ware slowing things down.
6- go here and download Zone Alarm, it's free and is a much better firewall than the windows firewall on your machine.
Make sure you uninstall any previous anti virus before installing another... They never play well together.
I've been using these utilities for several yrs. I've had 2 viruses during that time and AVG detected them as they were trying to load and killed em before they could actually do anything.
I agree 100% with the above, except for the Zone Alarm part, and that's because I don't have any experience with it.

I also suggest two other free programs, CCleaner and Spybot - Search And Destroy. They don't have to be run resident, so they won't eat any resources, but they work very well. I know several people that run them weekly.

Just don't do what a buddy of mine did when I recommended them to him. He Googled them and installed the first thing that popped up, which were paid ads for similar, but non-free products. He almost ended up buying stuff that he didn't need.

Give it a try... you'll love it!!
It was actually out there long before windows had a firewall built into it'd operating system. Just another sign where Bill Gates is following other peoples lead.

Yea when you Google AdAware you'll see lots of things that seem to be the one but when you install you end up with something different. That's why I put the link in my post.
I use Spybot as well. It seems to need more user interaction than it used to, that's why I left it out of my previous post.
I'm gonna go hunt down that CRAP Cleaner now.

Wow a lot of folks don't like McAffee, I use it cause it is free through my isp, have not had a single problem yet, as a matter of fact, I unloaded AVG when I installed McAffee. I had absolutelt no problems with AVG though, just wanted to take advantage of more user functions that were offered with the version of McAffee that Comcast offered. I do a lot of online gaming and have no issues with McAffee so far, (3 years now). I had Spybot and Ad-aware, but don't use them anymore, I loaded Spyware Blaster, that coupled with the spyware tool in the Comcast tool bar has worked very well for my system. I am going to google up the CRAP cleaner, looks like quite a few folks like it.

Thanks,

Tim

I don't use those toolbars either. Google, yahoo etc... they tend to create some issues. You might try running spybot and AdAware. I'll bet the Comcast toolbar you're running has it's own spyware. Since spyware blaster came with the toolbar it could be set to ignore Comcast's spyware. Most isp.s will have some spyware built into the software that they send you to load when you sign up with them. I never load that stuff either.

If you like having your logins and passwords to certain sites saved make sure you uncheck cookies when you delete or cleanup you system with CCleaner. If not you'll have to re-type all of those things.
I forgot to do that.

Spyware Blaster is on its own, not in the tool bar. The spyware removal tool in the Comcast tool bar is made by Pest Patrol.

Thanks for the info on the toolbars, I had no idea.

Thanks again for the good info, appreciate it,

Tim

There are three versions. You need the slim one. It doesn't include the toolbar.

Go to http://www.ccleaner.com/ download/builds and try again.
