Manual Transmissions

I drive a manual, wouldnt drive anything else. My girlfriend wont drive anything but an automatic. Wont even let me teach her to drive a manual trans.

So here is the question: How many of you who drive manuals have SOs who wont? Is it a good or bad thing?

When I taught my youngest daughter to drive she refused because I wouldn't let her drive the truck with the auto. She finally broke down and learned to drive the manual and has been very happy she can drive any vehicle now.

As for my SO she has never driven in 31 years of marriage!

My wife CAN drive my truck. She doesn't. She has her 4Runner, and I have my truck.

When we are together in either vehicle, I drive. Unless I have had to much to drink. And if I will be drinking we usually take her car (she rarely drinks.)

That being said, I am glad she can drive my truck. What if something happens to me when we are in the woods, or wherever else we go? I am glad she would be comfortable driving a stick to get me to the hosptal and not tear up my truck trying to figure out how to drive it... She actually drive a stick really well, and prefers one.

If there is a manual trans equipped vehicle in a family, I think everyone of driving age should know how to operate it. What if something happens and someone needs to go to a hospital and its the only vehicle around is a manual? Thats just my opinion.

The BOSS can drive my truck if she has too, but she isnt real comfortable with it. The throw is too large on the shifter for her( she has short little girly arms), and she tends to grind 'em alot.... so I prefer she NOT drive my truck, but she can in a pinch.
The daughters have each driven it enough that they could if they had to,but they dont like driving my ole " hick-looking farm truck"....

my girlfriend started out in a manual nissan, she's got a newer auto ranger now but she keeps pushing me to get a manual truck!
but seriously, if that girl's going to ride with you, as already stated, she NEEDS to learn for safety reasons. I think it'd be irritating to bleed to death cause she couldn't get me to a hospital.

I wont buy a slushbox for me ' ever.... I have been driving stick since I started driving at 15, in Oklahoma. And love it. I have taught quite a few people to drive stick, And the right way at that...
I laugh when people say that an auto is quicker than stick, Its just not true. If the auto is really built mabee but not stock.
Acouple of years ago I went and got my CDL and drove otr for about a year . And talk about shifting. Try ten speeds. Or mabee 18. Now thats a blast.

Stick all the way.

I bought my wife a 5-speed Sunfire after she said she'd learn to drive a standard. My heart almost stopped the first time she pulled into the garage. I was yelling, "Clutch! Clutch!" as my table saw was getting closer and closer. The first 2 weeks were brutal, lots of complaining. I was considering buying a neckbrace for her starts. She's doing great now..... but still wants an automatic.

I drove a Camaro with a close ratio Muncie trans and a Hurst Comp+ shifter for 8 years. Way too much fun doing wide open throttle shifts. Way too many tickets. Way too many sets of tires.... Oh to be young again.

I must be lucky, my gal has 2 of her own trucks, she would prefer to drive the old beat to haties Cheby with rotted glass packs (real loud). She wishes it was a stick. Heck she even splits her own wood and stacks it. Ive never owned anything but sticks until I got a auto jeep, cant beat it for lazy driving and rocks. I must be gettin old.

I don't have a problem with sticks, it's just that I've never figured out how to power brake them. They're also a lot harder to drive with one on the gas and one on the brake.

With turbodiesel's especially, an automatic capable of handling the power is vastly superior to a manual. That way you can build boost before launch and not loose your turbo speed when you shift. Right?

Now the automatic tranny does need to have lockup... I don't like driving without lockup.

learned to drive a stick in a 57 Chevy 2 ton (no synchronizers).
Wife claims to be able to drive a stick, but I have never seen it.
Currently have an automatic.

Only reason the autos are faster is we have crappy gears in the stick for accelerating!! That said I would rather drive or pull with a stick than a juice box any day. I used to have a chevy with a NV4500 that I taught the wife to drive a stick in. She hated it with a passion. Got the 95 and the wife wants my truck and it has the same NV4500 trans. Women are funny some times.
