Major Alaska highway flood damage
Well, the muddy Matanuska took a bite out of the Glenn highway at mile marker 64 and reduced it to one lane. That is a mile from me. This is the main freight route between Anchorage, Valdis, and the Canadian border. Unless of course you want to take a day long detour to Fairbanks. Because of environmentalist interference, the Feds and State of Alaska would rather people lose their homes to the river than redirect it back to its original channel. A large snow melt off and heavy rains contributed to a near full river and tributaries. If the highway goes, I will be cut off from nearby Palmer and Wasilla where we do our shopping, and the closest medical facility is.

Lees than half a mile up the highway: :quality(70)/cloudfront-us-east-1.images.arcpublishing.com/adn/ZDIJYPZ2NBDFVOWE3BV3MBWLOI.jpg)
When they built that house the river was on the other side of the valley. With each earthquake, the river moved toward the north side of the valley.

In the last several years, there has been flooding in the southern lakes region of the yukon. A lot of us have helped out with mitigation and trying to save properties, only to hear people complaining that the government isn’t doing enough.
A hard reality is, the government didn’t build your house below the historic high water mark, they didn’t build it on a flood plain, nor did they build it in an area where a geological event could cause a watercourse to shift through your property. These were all decisions made by land holders, in regards to their own properties. In some cases people had purchased these properties already built, and perhaps not understanding the real hazards of the locations. However, still not the government’s fault.
When it came down to the wire, neighbours and friends were more help than any official agency could, or would be. And that needs to happen for the situation over there as well. Be informed, help out, and make plans for future development to mitigate the effects of natural evolution.
keep safe out there.

Their make do repairs on the highway is already being washed away as more rain continues to fall in south central AK. Another summer without sunshine. One house had to be evaluated after the river washed away their septic tank and threatens the house. Another is in danger. My house is not in danger of washout as it sits on a solid outcropping however there is still the possibility of flooding, though minor.
