Loooong drive back from the Vet
Just got back from the Vet's office. Took my 12 year old Border Collie in for the last time. He woke up this morning and couldn't walk. I knew his back legs and hips were going bad-----but why now--why this soon. He just laid there with a blank stare, and I guess I did too. We just laid there on the floor together for a couple of hours. **** it's going to be a long day. I just got home and I have already called for him to come to me once?????? I guess I'm not as tough as I thought.

That drive to and from the vet is the hardest thing I've ever done. Took my basset hound of 10 years to the vet 2 years ago to be put down.. Poor thing became incontinent and with a baby on the way this was not acceptable. Cried like a baby for about a day afterwards. Still think about that stuburn dog just about everyday..

This too will pass; comfort and good thoughts sent to you from New York.
Believe me, you did the right thing, no suffering, no further uneccessary interventions for that situation. I sucked it up to be there with the vet and glad i was later (a few days later), took my companion (15 y.o.alaskan malamute) home for burial under favorite tree. These animals give so much, good thoughts and memories for ya! you have a lot of company here.

sorry to hear about your loss. I have my best friend (2 year old boxer) sitting next to me right now and i don't know what i am going to when the time comes for him to go. With time things will get better. Hang in there.

Sorry for your loss. The grief will pass, but not the memories. It helps to get another dog. We had our last Blue Heeler put down because she got hit by a car. We got another one a couple of months later. The new one does some of the same things as the old one sometimes. Makes me think back to our first one.

It was really tough when we lost out shepherd of 12 years. He was so kind hearted, yet defended our property with vengeance (105 pounds of muscle!!)!! They are truly part of the family and when they go, it hurts. Things will get better...

Thanks for your comments and experiences. I was thinking today, just how do we get so attached to these animals. I think I figured it out--they are always happy to see you, they are always in a good mood, they never tell you to clean up after yourself, they don't tell you to stop working on your truck or quit spending so much time on the computer. They don't tell you how to spend your money and they are happy with just a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ear. I think I'm going to miss that dog more than I'd miss my-------ah never mind
Thanks again everyone

It is amazing how quickly they become a part of your life for sure. We have only had our mastiff/pit mixes (brothers) for a couple months and had to send them to the wifes parents when we went to the Spring Fling dyno event. First time without them since we got them; the house was eerily quiet and we missed them the first morning they were gone.
The pain of losing a pet is second to few others; thoughts and prayers for ya from PA, time will heal it, and a replacement definitely makes it easier. You said it yourself, pretty much the only beings to never judge or belittle you; always appreciative of every moment they have with you.
reminds me of a favorite quote:
"My greatest aspiration is to one day be the person that my dog thinks I am."
